Pink Tutu Rome: Wednesday 2007-03-28 - Ciao Bella!

Well, hello lovelies! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing blogger, Emma, back from a whirlwind trip to the Eternal City, Rome! As you all know, I'm absolutely bonkers for ballet (it's pretty much my whole life, after all), and when I heard about the Rome Opera House, well, let's just say my tutu was twirling with excitement.

And believe me, my darling readers, it did not disappoint!

Rome, as you all know, is a city steeped in history and beauty, the very air buzzing with the excitement of the past. Stepping off the train, I felt that magic right away, the scent of espresso filling my nostrils and the chattering sounds of Italian conversations swirling around me like a sweet, captivating melody. The sun was shining, and everything shimmered, the yellow limestone of the buildings and the terracotta rooftops catching the light like golden coins. And my dear readers, you just know that I had to find a gelato stall for my very first treat in this glorious city!

I don't know why, but Italy just feels like the ultimate ballet destination. It's a place where history, culture and art collide, all woven into a stunning, intricate tapestry. You see, ballet itself is a kind of storytelling through movement, isn't it? It tells us about life, love, passion, joy, and heartbreak. And isn't that exactly what we see reflected in Rome, in its grand architecture, in the lively streets, in the warmth and charisma of the people?

Now, I know you're all itching to know about the opera, right? So, let's dive in!

The Rome Opera House, or Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, is this magnificent building, draped in the elegance of history, its facade like a delicate lacework of sculpted figures and decorative flourishes. As I walked towards it, a blush of excitement took over my cheeks (just like my favourite blusher!) I knew that this wasn't just any performance, it was an experience! I had already seen an array of shows across Europe: I loved watching "Swan Lake" at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, it was just mesmerising, and "Giselle" in Paris with a tutu as big as my tiny flat! However, this one in Rome promised to be special. I couldn't help but twirl, feeling all the energy of the city pulsating through me.

This time, the show was "The Nutcracker" (I always love a good dose of Christmas cheer, no matter the season). My love for this show knows no bounds, and it seemed fitting to witness it in a city brimming with its own magic and enchantment.

Oh, the wonder! I practically gasped when I first saw the interior. My heart went aflutter! The plush red velvet seating, the crystal chandeliers that glimmered like a million twinkling stars, the breathtaking architecture – I felt like I had stepped straight into a fairy tale. The excitement practically hummed in the air, punctuated by the buzz of pre-show chatter and the gentle tinkling of glasses. The entire space felt alive with anticipation!

Then the music began… Tchaikovsky's masterpiece unfolded around me, its notes swirling and soaring through the air, painting a tapestry of emotions. As the ballerinas twirled with effortless grace, I felt a shiver of wonder run through me. Their costumes were just divine: from the shimmering tulle tutus to the elaborately embroidered pointe shoes.

Honestly, the whole evening felt like a ballet dream. The dance itself was truly magical. The ballerinas were simply exquisite, every move so graceful, precise, and full of emotion. It was a visual treat, each gesture flowing beautifully into the next. And I tell you what, even though the performance was in Italian, I didn't need to understand the words to get swept away by the story they told.

The atmosphere was electric, every movement echoing the city's vibrant soul. You could feel the emotions in the air: the joy of the party scene, the magic of the Nutcracker's transformation, the vulnerability of Clara. And for a moment, I was right there with them, sharing every moment, every feeling. It was pure magic, just what my ballet-loving heart needed!

And of course, what is a trip to Rome without some delightful shopping? The Via Condotti, with its elegant boutiques, felt just perfect. I must confess, my beloved pink tutus got a serious makeover, courtesy of a wonderful little shop. I can't share its location yet, I'm still waiting on a special design commission for a piece of embroidery!

As a finishing touch to my trip, I had to capture the memory. So, a portrait on the Spanish Steps was just perfect. I stood there in my gorgeous pink tulle tutu (what else?), the immaculate staircase cascading behind me, looking down onto the buzzing square. I couldn’t resist striking a dramatic pose – after all, what better place to feel like a ballerina queen than amongst all those amazing fountains?

I left Rome with a heart brimming with memories, my spirit lighter than a feather, my mind filled with twirling delight. I tell you what, my dearest readers, there’s something magical about experiencing ballet in a city so steeped in history and art.

The Romans may be famous for their gladiators, but Rome now holds a new place in my heart as a place where ballerinas can shine.

Next stop? Well, I haven't made up my mind just yet! Keep those gorgeous, pink tutu-clad legs twirling for me, darlings! See you all back next Wednesday for another ballet adventure!

And remember, the world needs more pink tutus. So get out there, find yours, and dance!

Yours in sequins and twirls,

Emma
