#PinkTutuRome: A Twirling Adventure in the Eternal City (Post 749)

Ciao, darlings! It’s Wednesday, the 14th of October, 2009, and your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina has landed in Rome! That’s right, I’m finally in the Eternal City, and let me tell you, the only thing more magical than the history surrounding me is the sunshine.

Rome has a different energy than Derbyshire, it’s full of bustling life and passionate, expressive Italians. My train journey here was so peaceful; watching the countryside roll past and listening to my favourite ballet playlist. There’s just something about a train journey that settles my mind and lets my imagination go wild.

As I said, the sun is shining gloriously here in Rome. I’ve already had my morning cappuccino and a delicious croissant outside a cute little cafe near my hotel. (Everything here is so photogenic!) I’m wearing a lovely pink ruffled top, my favourite pair of vintage denim dungarees and, of course, a pale pink tutu – what else would I be wearing in this magical place?!

My plans today are packed to the brim. I’ve got a ballet class at the lovely 'Studio di Danza Romana', and you know I couldn’t possibly miss it, even on my travels. They even do an adorable pink ballet-themed afternoon tea after! Then, in the evening, there's a performance at the Teatro dell’Opera. I'm particularly excited about this, as it's a classic ballet I've only seen filmed before - the story should come to life beautifully!

I can't wait to explore all the beautiful ancient sites, walk around the cobbled streets and visit the stunning Galleria Borghese. The city is truly overflowing with breathtaking art, architecture and, let’s be honest, fashion inspiration! I plan on filling you in on all the best shopping finds, trust me – my little pink tutu and I have a thing for good fashion deals!

A day in Rome with the pink tutu:

The Studio di Danza Romana was tucked away in a little alleyway near the Pantheon. It was so cute, all pink walls and twinkling lights. The studio itself was a dream, filled with antique wooden barres and fluffy pink carpets. It reminded me so much of my childhood dance studio in Derbyshire, just with a little extra Roman glamour! I met the loveliest group of women there, and we had such a lovely class, focusing on elegant arm work and pirouette technique. I was already feeling like a little bit of Rome had rubbed off on me.

My Top Tip: If you're a fellow ballet enthusiast, definitely add Studio di Danza Romana to your itinerary. It's a wonderful experience, even if you just drop in for a spot of afternoon tea and some conversation. They’ve got a lovely pink cake platter and offer to let visitors watch the classes!

The afternoon tea was as divine as you can imagine, featuring tiny sandwiches with the finest prosciutto and mozzarella, beautiful little cakes, and of course, more delicious cappuccino. We had a good chat with the lovely teacher who gave us so many great recommendations for hidden gems in Rome – a little boutique with handmade lace that caught my eye!

Later, it was time for the performance at the Teatro dell'Opera. This was my absolute highlight of the day. Stepping inside the beautiful theatre was an absolute privilege. Imagine the history and emotions that have been felt in this place for centuries! It was overwhelming in the most beautiful way.

The ballet was the timeless Swan Lake and the entire performance was a triumph! I was transported to the fairy tale world of swans and princesses, captivated by the beautiful choreography and dazzling costumes. The leading ballerina, a young Italian with incredible talent, was mesmerizing. My tears even welled up during the tragic ending, as much as I loved the beautiful, romantic choreography!

My Top Tip: You must absolutely see a ballet at Teatro dell’Opera if you're in Rome. They offer everything from classics like Swan Lake and Giselle to modern contemporary performances. You can find their program on their website. You won't regret it.

I had dinner at a lovely little trattoria just around the corner from my hotel, enjoying the most delicious carbonara and a glass of red wine. All this delicious food has given me such a lovely burst of energy – so I just had to wander around and soak up the night atmosphere in the city centre.

I think what struck me the most was the energy here. The atmosphere is so lively. Everyone is out and about late into the evening, enjoying themselves in piazzas and cafes. This isn't a place where people rush into bed.

What to expect if you're wearing a pink tutu in Rome

To my utter delight, people in Rome were so receptive to the pink tutu. From children excitedly waving at me, to elderly ladies beaming from shop doorways, to handsome gentlemen pausing for a moment to appreciate the bright colour - I felt a constant wave of love and acceptance. You know I was doing my usual pink-tutu-promoting – striking poses, twirling, and simply radiating joy – and I even spotted a few other women embracing a bit of tutu in their own way. There was even a family where both daughters had gorgeous pink tutus on! My goal is to spread pink tutu magic, one happy moment at a time. It’s definitely a mission in progress.

It has been such a magical day in the Eternal City, and I already know that tomorrow will be just as dazzling.

Stay tuned for more pink-tutu adventures from Rome next Wednesday!

Until then, wear pink, dance your heart out and live life with all the passion and vibrancy of this beautiful city.

Lots of love, Emma
