Pink Tutu Rome: Week 866 - Bonjour from the Eternal City!

Hello my darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Rome! It’s Wednesday, so you know what that means… another fabulous travel tale from yours truly!

This week, I’m whisking you all off to the Eternal City, Rome! It’s the perfect destination for a glamorous girl like myself, bursting with history, delicious food, and some of the most exquisite fashion you can imagine. But don’t think for a moment that I’ve left my pink tutu behind - oh no, dear readers, it's travelled with me all the way to Italy, ready to add a touch of whimsy to this ancient city.

Now, I must confess, getting here wasn't quite as romantic as a scene from a Fellini film. That would require a sleek vintage convertible, not a sardine-packed train. But even the jostling, sweaty commute had a certain charm - a glimpse into the pulse of the Italian people, with everyone chatting animatedly, eating delectable sandwiches, and of course, indulging in copious amounts of coffee. The energy was infectious, and I knew from the very start this was going to be a special trip.

Speaking of energy, I can’t imagine a better way to kick off my Roman adventures than with a little dance. My beloved pink tutu, now sporting a fetching set of silver beads and an air of sophisticated Italian glamour, led me to a ballet class in a beautifully renovated building in the Trastevere neighborhood. My teacher, Signora Francesca, was a charmingly spirited woman with the grace of a seasoned dancer, her kind eyes twinkling with the warmth of the Tuscan sun. We glided across the worn wood floor, practicing pirouettes and fouettés, my pink tutu swirling around me in a blissful symphony of colour and movement.

From there, it was straight into the city centre. Oh, Rome, you really are something special! It’s a whirlwind of vibrant colour, breathtaking architecture, and, of course, those iconic fountains. Every corner holds a new delight - a cobblestone alleyway leading to a hidden café, the gentle sound of laughter mingling with the strains of street musicians, and, naturally, the tantalising aroma of freshly baked bread. I couldn't help myself and stopped by the bakery just outside the Pantheon to sample some of the most delicious bread I’ve ever tasted – flaky, buttery, and studded with plump, juicy raisins.

Did I mention the shopping? Forget your dreary chain stores – here, the streets are lined with the most gorgeous independent boutiques, filled with the finest silks, leathers, and handcrafted jewellery. I’m talking bespoke accessories, exquisite handmade shoes, and dazzling clothes made for a princess, all with that distinct Italian touch. I have a feeling my suitcase is going to be bursting with treasures by the time I head back to Derbyshire.

The afternoon found me basking in the warm Roman sunshine on the edge of the Trevi Fountain, tossing a coin into its shimmering depths and dreaming of my next adventure. This, my dear readers, is the heart of Roman magic! A city brimming with energy, creativity, and the kind of romance that takes you straight back in time.

Tonight, I'll be soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, taking in a magnificent performance of Swan Lake. Nothing beats the artistry and elegance of classical ballet, and I can’t wait to see these dancers pirouette across the stage, the beautiful music cascading around me, and, of course, my own pink tutu tucked safely inside my handbag.

Rome, I have fallen head over heels for your charm, your warmth, your artistic energy, and, most importantly, your dedication to fashion! Until next week, my lovelies,

Ciao, Bella!

Emma

Post Scriptum: For those of you wanting to make the journey, a tip from me, the Pink Tutu traveller. Don’t underestimate the beauty of train travel! It’s far more glamorous than you might think, particularly in Italy. Forget the humdrum of airport security lines, you can sit back, enjoy a glass of wine (or a hot chocolate for the little ones) and absorb the stunning landscapes rushing past the window. Just remember, wear comfortable shoes!
