Pink Tutu Rome - #895 - 01/08/2012
Ciao bella! It’s Wednesday, which means it's time for another Pink Tutu adventure, and guess what? This week, I'm in glorious Rome, Italy! I feel like a Roman goddess in my pink tutu, even if I do look a bit out of place amongst the cobbled streets and ancient ruins!
This trip is all thanks to a fab ballet gig I landed last week at the gorgeous Theatre Royal in Derby. It’s funny how I started ballet when I was just five in Derbyshire and now, years later, it’s taken me all the way to Rome! Who knew?
And trust me, Rome hasn’t disappointed. From the second I stepped off the train, I’ve been in awe of the city's grandeur. You’ve got to be kidding me - I even saw a fountain made entirely of marble and sculpted with amazing creatures! That’s what I call good taste! And, the shopping here! It's every fashionista's dream - I found the most divine beaded bag, perfect for my upcoming trip to the opera. I think it might even inspire a future pink tutu look - what do you think, loves?
Speaking of operas, did you know the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is putting on a spectacular production of “La Bohème” tonight? My friend Giulia, who I met while taking a ballet class in the park (you’ve just GOT to try ballet en pointe in the middle of the Spanish steps, it’s the best!), has invited me to join her for a pre-opera supper at a quaint little cafe in Trastevere. She tells me the place is famous for its amazing ricotta pancakes, and I just can’t wait to give them a try.
One thing I’ve realised in my travels, the world loves tutus just as much as I do! While walking around today, I spotted a couple of ladies rocking their own pink tutu designs - one had a beautifully handcrafted vintage style tutu, the other was in a glittery, iridescent number! They totally gave me the inspiration for my next ballet performance - think glittery and vintage, with a sprinkle of Roman glamour!
Now, I know what you're thinking, “Emma, it’s super hot in Rome, how can you wear a pink tutu?” Well, let’s just say I've brought my very own light, breezy tutu with me! I call it the Roman Rhapsody, and trust me, it’s a dream to wear even in the hottest weather. I might just make it a staple piece in my travelling wardrobe, because honestly, you can wear it literally everywhere.
It's Wednesday, and it's time for the weekly Pink Tutu blog, so here are the must-dos in Rome for a perfect pink tutu trip:
Emma’s Must-Do Roman Itinerary (in a pink tutu, of course!):
- Colosseum & Roman Forum: The iconic Roman Forum is absolutely worth a visit. It's the ultimate spot for history buffs like me! I’d definitely recommend taking a guided tour to hear all the juicy stories behind this ancient place. And of course, you HAVE to visit the Colosseum – a stunning and powerful symbol of Rome's empire.
- Trevi Fountain & The Pantheon: I’ve always dreamed of throwing a coin into Trevi Fountain and wishing for a trip to Rome - you guys know my love for travel! I mean, it's truly an unforgettable experience and the fountain itself is breathtaking, you simply have to see it. The Pantheon, though, is where it’s at for the history buffs! Just look at the architectural perfection and imagine the ancient Romans creating this. You just can't imagine how much they accomplished without the aid of modern tools and machinery!
- The Vatican Museums: If you’re into religious art and architecture, the Vatican museums are a must-see. The Sistine Chapel, with its gorgeous ceilings painted by Michelangelo, is especially worth visiting. It’s a little bit crowded, but the awe-inspiring experience is completely worth the squeeze.
- Spanish Steps & Borghese Gallery: These stunning stairs are iconic, offering amazing views of the city. I absolutely recommend trying a graceful ballet pose in the centre of the steps! As for the Borghese Gallery, I adore their collection of paintings by Bernini and Caravaggio – my all-time favourite artists!
But here’s the best part – if you're visiting Rome for the first time, a great way to see the sights is by hop-on, hop-off bus. Honestly, a good, relaxing, sit-down on a sunny day with views of Rome… who could ask for anything more? The hop-on, hop-off bus route also covers all the must-see places. I think it's such a convenient way to see the best of the city!
And of course, food! You can't come to Italy without indulging in some delicious authentic food. I absolutely recommend grabbing a gelato - there’s nothing quite like a big scoop of creamy Italian ice cream on a sunny Roman day, is there? And a trip to the Mercato Centrale, a gigantic foodie heaven with all the tasty goodies you could ever dream of.
I hope this inspires you all to visit Rome, it really is a magical city that should be on everyone's bucket list. Even if you're not planning a trip anytime soon, get ready for a virtual Pink Tutu Rome adventure because, as you know, it's Pink Tutu Wednesday, which means it's time for Outfit of the Day!
Today’s look:
I chose a beautiful baby pink tutu with shimmering tulle that danced in the wind like a graceful ballerina. I paired it with a classic white shirt that popped against the vibrant colour, and completed the look with delicate rose-gold ballet flats for an extra dose of Roman glamour. This outfit just screamed prima ballerina, which is exactly what I aimed for - a perfect way to express my love for ballet, Rome, and of course, the beautiful colour pink!
Stay tuned, you gorgeous ballet bunnies, as tomorrow is my trip to the opera and my post on my favourite fashion picks from Rome. Until then, stay fabulous! And as always, wear a pink tutu and spread the pink tutu love!
Love and pink tutus, Emma
