Pink Tutu Rome - Post #934 - 01st May 2013: Bella Roma, You’ve Stolen My Heart!

Hello my darlings! This week, the Pink Tutu landed in the Eternal City, and oh, my goodness, is it ever living up to its name! It's been a whirlwind of breathtaking history, dazzling sights, delicious food, and the most charming little boutiques, and you just have to come with me on this adventure!

Before I get carried away (and believe me, that's easy to do in Rome!), let me just say this is actually my ninth trip to this gorgeous city! My first was way back in 2004, when I was a fresh-faced ballerina just starting out in Derbyshire. But you know how it is, once you experience a bit of "la dolce vita" it's hard to stay away, and since then, I've been back pretty much every year. Each visit feels like a reunion with an old friend, each discovery makes my heart skip a beat!

From Derby to the Eternal City...

The journey itself was such a treat. Travelling by train always has this magical feel, and especially on the Eurostar - I love how you just pop onto the platform in London, and boom! A couple of hours later you're in a completely different country! This time, I'd snagged a great first class ticket, which felt positively luxurious. My secret indulgence? A whole basket of mini pink cupcakes, naturally. Gotta stay on brand!

My Ballet Adventures...

Once in Rome, the first thing I had to do, of course, was indulge my inner ballerina! My mission this time? To find a fantastic ballet class! Now, Rome may be known for its gladiators and Colosseum, but it also boasts a beautiful ballet scene. With a little bit of internet sleuthing, I discovered the most delightful studio called "Balletto in Movimento," nestled away in the charming Trastevere neighbourhood. They offered a wonderful contemporary class taught by the charming Lucia, a dancer with a wealth of knowledge and such a beautiful spirit. Honestly, I could have stayed for another hour! The studio itself was light and airy, and it's surrounded by all the typical cobblestone Roman streets and charming cafes – what's not to love?!

Fashion & Fiasco (But Don't Worry!)...

And of course, my Rome adventures wouldn't be complete without a little bit of shopping. Rome has the most incredible array of designers and boutiques, everything from vintage treasures tucked away on hidden streets, to chic designer boutiques lining the elegant Via Condotti. It's like a fashion fantasyland. On Monday, I treated myself to the most gorgeous pair of delicate coral-coloured, bejeweled heels. Honestly, I'm in love. But... here's where the little "fiasco" comes in. Imagine my absolute heartbreak when, on Tuesday, I completely tripped and fell on those heels while exploring the stunning Trevi Fountain! Not just a small stumble, my darlings, but a proper face plant! Let's just say, my tutu didn't emerge unscathed.

Thankfully, the beautiful Romans came to my aid, my new Roman "friends" literally helped me up, all with smiles and "mi dispiace" ("sorry"). One sweet lady even offered me a tissue. I know this isn't quite "la dolce vita", but I swear, the kindness and charm of these people really make all the difference! And it wouldn't be the Pink Tutu adventures without a little mishap!

Food, Glory, and Pantheon-sized Wonders...

But enough about my ballet adventures and shopping mishaps. The real stars of Rome are its history and architecture. I've already explored a whole new part of the city that I didn't even know about, this beautiful little park nestled in the centre of Rome, with cascading waterfalls, palm trees and blooming flowers – who knew this existed in the middle of the city? Absolutely magical! I swear I must have spent at least half an hour just staring in awe, trying to take it all in! And on this, the eve of the First of May, a Roman holiday celebrated across the country, this lovely place is practically exploding with vibrant decorations and joyful families having picnics! And did I mention the gelato?! (Oh, the gelato!)

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of experiencing the most breathtaking visit to the Pantheon. To say this is a breathtaking structure doesn't do it justice, it's genuinely jaw-droppingly amazing, so perfectly designed with that beautiful circular dome! There was a moment of silence inside as the sun streamed in, illuminating everything, that was simply otherworldly. The sense of awe and grandeur I felt while I was standing in the heart of this structure was something I will truly cherish for a lifetime. And honestly, it wasn't the Pantheon alone, this city holds this incredible juxtaposition between old and new, classic and modern, it truly offers an unforgettable journey! I could talk about these beautiful historical landmarks for ages, but I won't. (Maybe that’ll be for another post!)

This Week's Top 3 Picks: The Best of Rome in 3!

And that, my lovelies, is where my "Pink Tutu in Rome" week has taken me so far! It's been a blur of exciting experiences, and I know there's so much more to discover. But before I head off for my next big adventure, I simply have to share with you the top 3 must-do's in Rome:

  • The Pantheon: Truly awe-inspiring, and absolutely free!
  • Balletto in Movimento: For ballet classes that bring you right to the heart of Rome’s artistic pulse.
  • Exploring Trastevere: It’s where you can really soak up the local atmosphere. Wander the cobbled streets, pop into quirky boutiques and treat yourself to delicious pasta in a charming little cafe.

And my dear lovelies, I've left the very best for last! Remember those coral-coloured bejeweled heels I told you about? Well, despite the unfortunate fall (ouch!) I’m wearing them with my Pink Tutu to an exquisite performance of La Traviata at the Teatro dell’Opera! You’ve gotta see this stunning venue! I am utterly giddy at the prospect of a breathtaking performance, accompanied by incredible music. This city is about to experience a very special kind of Pink Tutu magic! And guess what, darlings, I am sharing the excitement with all of you!! Stay tuned!

Until next Wednesday, my dear lovelies, remember, a Pink Tutu never goes out of style. Stay fabulous!

Emma xoxo
