Pink Tutu Rome: Ciao Bella! 🩰🇮🇹 (Post #980)

Buongiorno, darling! Emma here, your Pink Tutu Queen, back from a whirlwind tour of the Eternal City! 👑 I'm so excited to share my adventures with you from Rome, a city that stole my heart as quickly as a pirouette. It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for our weekly Pink Tutu Rome adventure. If you’re a new reader, welcome! You can check out the Pink Tutu London blog for some fabulous city adventures there.

Remember that glorious feeling of anticipation as you board a train for your holiday? I am quite a train enthusiast, I have to confess, especially when it's taking me to somewhere like Rome! 🚂 The journey was filled with dreams of ancient history, gelato, and a city that was the perfect backdrop for a ballerina's whimsical heart. (As an aside, can I just tell you that travelling in a tutu, and my trusty pink backpack, definitely makes me feel like a princess!)

This time, my Roman escapades were fueled by a performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" by the illustrious Rome Opera Ballet. It's the stuff dreams are made of, honestly. The dancers, the costumes, the set – it all took my breath away, which isn't easy when you’ve got a tutu on! The sheer skill and elegance left me spellbound, and of course, the perfect excuse to have an extravagant ballet-themed evening out. A truly unforgettable night of ballet magic!

Shopping Heaven & Discovering Roman Charm

Rome, my love, you have captivated me with your charm and beautiful chaos. It was a sensory overload – vibrant street performers, delicious smells wafting from bustling cafes, the sound of laughter echoing from cobblestone squares… and all those shops! Oh, the shopping! 🛍️

Rome is definitely a fashionista’s dream. I lost myself in the designer boutiques of Via Condotti, where I almost purchased a divine pink-hued Valentino dress. Imagine my shock and delight at finding a quirky, vintage tutu shop nestled away in Trastevere. I nabbed the most amazing sparkly pink tutu – definitely worthy of a trip to the Trevi Fountain later that week! I may have gone a bit overboard with some charming handmade ceramics featuring little ballet dancers and a breathtaking antique mirror with an ornate ballet dancer frame, but can you really say no to those?

Gelato, Pasta, & Pasta &… Pasta

And of course, no Rome trip is complete without indulging in the delicious cuisine. Rome is simply a culinary playground! From hearty pastas to the creamy tiramisu, each bite was an explosion of flavour. I even had the courage to try a classic Italian street food, the “trapizzino” – essentially a triangle of toasted pizza dough filled with a delicious meat ragu, a perfect comfort food for a chilly night. 🥪 I can’t lie – I may have overindulged just a bit, especially with all the fantastic gelato! A trip to Rome isn't complete without devouring an endless stream of gelato. 🍨

I savoured my favourite – gelato al pistacchio - while wandering the romantic streets and catching impromptu street performances, from soulful buskers playing melancholic melodies to flamboyant acrobats defying gravity. Every turn presented a new, vibrant moment that brought this incredible city to life.

Dancing in the Eternal City

Speaking of bringing this city to life, how could I go to Rome without getting my tutu twirling on the iconic Spanish Steps? They truly were as magnificent as I’d hoped! So many photo ops with my new vintage tutu! My friends laughed when they saw me, and insisted I did some twirls, which turned into a full-blown ballet flash mob. Rome really has the most wonderful energy for just dancing – I just let loose and we all had a magical afternoon in the heart of the city. I was even joined by a street artist who drew a sketch of our little ballerina ensemble in pink. 💖 I simply adore this city!

Travel Tips from the Tutu Queen

Rome was pure enchantment, from the ancient Colosseum, a majestic testament to its imperial past, to the peaceful Borghese Gallery filled with art that stole my breath. The Pantheon, a marvel of Roman architecture, and the romantic Trevi Fountain with its mesmerizing cascading water, left me spellbound. I loved exploring this city with my pink tutu and enjoying my time soaking up every bit of Italian magic.

Here’s a few pink tutu-tastic travel tips I’ve learned about travelling to Rome:

  • Get lost in the side streets! Rome is a maze, which is all part of the fun! But if you have a little time on your hands, grab a map and head for those tucked-away, quaint corners. This is where the true charm lies – the aroma of freshly baked bread, charming street artists, hidden gems, and bustling neighbourhood piazzas. Rome isn’t just about the big attractions – embrace the journey!

  • The food, glorious food! I’ve already touched on this, but honestly, don’t shy away from ordering “off-menu.” If something catches your eye, don’t be afraid to ask! Italians are known for their love of food, and they will often go above and beyond to accommodate your needs. Be adventurous and explore the delicious flavors of this culinary heaven.

  • Pack light! You will be walking A LOT. My favourite little pink backpack holds all my essentials, but the fewer items you bring the more comfortable your explorations will be!

  • The joy of public transport! The metro is very easy to navigate, and much cheaper than taking a taxi. If you’re planning on exploring Rome over several days, I highly recommend a pass that will allow you unlimited travel throughout the city. Plus, the Rome metro is like taking a little vintage underground adventure! 🚇

  • Take time to savour the simple pleasures! Grab a coffee in a little square, watch the locals play bocce ball, have a picnic lunch in a picturesque park, just stop and listen to the world around you, and let Rome sweep you up in its magic!

This city is full of surprises, so embrace each moment, be brave, and don’t be afraid to twirl on those cobblestone streets! I know it’s a dream for every tutu-loving dancer, so get ready to create your own memories!

Stay pink and fabulous!

Love,

Emma
