Pink Tutu Rome: Post 1245 – La Dolce Vita & Pink Tutus!

Ciao bellas! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad traveller, Emma, back from the Eternal City of Rome, ready to spill all the fabulous details of my latest adventure. Today's post is all about pink tutus and a trip to the most romantic city in the world.

My trusty travel companion – my ever-so-pink suitcase – was packed to the brim with my latest Tutulicious outfits. I'm convinced that pink tutus are the ultimate travel attire – not only are they comfy and fun, they're guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone's faces. Think about it: can you imagine trying on a gorgeous new frock in a quaint boutique in the heart of Rome wearing your trusty pink tutu?

Rome itself is a masterpiece, a city where ancient history meets vibrant modern life. Every corner holds a surprise - a beautiful fountain, a majestic cathedral, or a charming trattoria where you can devour delicious pasta and indulge in a creamy cappuccino. The city itself feels like a stage, just begging for a little pink tutu performance, wouldn't you agree?

Train Travel - The Romance of Rails

As a ballet dancer, you know how much I love to travel by train. It's my favourite way to get to a new destination - time to relax, soak in the scenery, and maybe even jot down some ideas for future performances. The train journey from my Derbyshire home to Rome was an adventure in itself.

The French countryside glided by in a blur of vineyards and charming villages, and by the time we reached the Italian border, the air had changed, buzzing with an energy I can only describe as ‘la dolce vita.’

Rome: My First Impression

And then… I arrived in Rome, a symphony of sights and sounds. The air smelled of coffee, fresh bread, and a faint hint of ancient stone.

This week, I've been living my best ballet life in Rome. We arrived on Monday and it has been non-stop ever since!

Day 1: Colosseum & Gladiator Training

It's the perfect location, isn’t it? Imagine all those incredible gladiators performing under the vast blue sky, probably doing a fabulous spin and leap here and there. The first order of business was a visit to the Colosseum, a magnificent amphitheater built over 2,000 years ago. I could almost picture the gladiatorial battles, the crowds cheering, the thrill of the fight… not that I like to fight! But it really sparked some ideas for a future performance – "Colosseum Ballet"! It’s going to be a big one, you guys, so get ready.

In the afternoon, I had a fantastic experience learning some gladiator skills at a local martial arts school. It was incredibly tiring, but also immensely satisfying to wield a wooden sword (in a very safe and supervised environment, naturally). I actually used my pointe shoes to train and had everyone there convinced they needed a ballet lesson – the instructors were especially interested in seeing the attitude.

Day 2: Shopping and Style

I can't resist a good shopping spree, can I? I just had to delve into the fashion paradise that is Rome, filled with stylish boutiques, designer shops, and a whole host of independent boutiques and antique markets selling the most gorgeous outfits and accessories. The cobblestone streets around the Pantheon, Navona, and Trevi Fountain were my playground, where I danced my way around stalls bursting with colourful fabric and hand-crafted jewellery. I found an exquisite silk scarf with a vibrant floral design and a beautiful pair of black stiletto boots. I mean, every girl needs some black stilettos, don’t you agree?

Day 3: The Vatican & The Arts

Every city has its secrets, and in Rome, it’s The Vatican. Imagine - it's like stepping back in time into a whole world of beauty and art. The Michelangelo masterpieces inside the Sistine Chapel left me breathless, each brushstroke a testament to human ingenuity and talent. I found myself staring at the magnificent frescoes, imagining how these ancient artists had worked their magic. I got an idea for my ballet performance from the Pope’s palace and decided it will be called “The Pope’s Palace – Ballet in Heaven.”

After the Vatican, we explored the Galleria Borghese, a museum filled with sculpture and paintings. I love Bernini's sculptures and think he would be impressed by a ballet in his honour. So watch this space.

Day 4: A Ballet Evening

Oh my, you can’t imagine how excited I was for tonight’s event. You all know my passion is ballet, so a trip to Rome would be nothing without visiting one of the iconic Opera houses – Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, home to the world-renowned Rome Opera House! Tonight was the opening night of "La Bohème," and as I gracefully navigated my way around the red carpet, adorned in a pink sequined tutu (and a gorgeous silver sequined bolero) my heart was fluttering with excitement.

La Bohème is a perfect ballet and had the audience transfixed. The dance moves, the storyline – it was utterly breathtaking. Afterwards, I had the most lovely time mingling with the artists backstage. Imagine, Emma with a tutu on, standing in a backstage environment. That’s some kind of a fairytale. We all bonded over a shared love of ballet, which is something that always makes me feel like I’ve found a home.

Day 5: Roman History & La dolce vita

Today was all about soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Roman history. We strolled along the ancient Appian Way, taking in the remains of Roman roads and aqueducts. And a beautiful church built around the very structure of a former bath house, built to soak away stress after an impressive bout of gladiatorial battles. In a true ballerina way, my visit involved plenty of photos in a relaxed and comfy ballet-esque stance in a gorgeous long floral skirt and black top. And of course, my pink tutu wouldn’t have missed the trip. I mean, where else would you want to twirl your heart out!

Then, a trip to the heart of Roman nightlife, with my fellow adventurers – where else but Piazza Navona! This buzzing square with its magnificent fountains and street performers is the perfect spot to experience the vibrancy and romance of Rome. I felt like I’d stumbled straight into a movie – all beautiful marble, lively conversations and the music floating in the warm summer air, and some seriously yummy pizza and ice cream, making this whole experience complete. I may have had a glass of something a little less "fizzy" but you can't fault a girl for wanting a bit of the ‘la dolce vita’.

My Rome Love Story: More to Come

As I’m writing this blog post, from my Roman Hotel Room with views that look out over the Roman city lights – which remind me of a ballet stage, illuminated and full of light – I realize there’s just so much to share about Rome! From its captivating historical sights to its charming cafes and delightful restaurants, it's a city that ignites every one of your senses. And as a ballet dancer, it’s also inspired so many ideas that will turn into new, amazing ballet performances.

This is only the beginning of my Roman adventures! Next week I'm exploring the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and the beautiful gardens around the Vatican, plus taking some traditional Italian ballet lessons. I promise to update you all on those exciting developments on www.pink-tutu.com every Wednesday, because a ballerina’s work is never done.

Stay tuned and see you all next week. Keep twirling!
