It's Wednesday, which means it's Pink Tutu Rome time, and I am bursting with excitement to share all the magical adventures that have filled my past week. This trip to Italy is extra special - not only am I indulging my love of all things beautiful and historic, but I'm also celebrating reaching 1,505 blog posts! Pinch me, I must be dreaming!
Before we dive into the delights of Rome, a little bit about how I got here. As you know, I fund my travel adventures by performing in ballet shows, which keeps me wonderfully fit and gives me a chance to showcase my passion for this beautiful art form. Last weekend, I performed in a show in Derbyshire, my home county, where I treated the audience to a dazzling new number - a vibrant fusion of classic ballet and modern flair, all in a, you guessed it, pink tutu!
The applause was deafening, the flowers abundant, and it truly made my heart soar. I immediately packed my bags and headed to the station, the train tickets already booked - a big thumbs up for the trusty train network, it's an eco-friendly way to travel and gives me time to daydream and write in my pink journal.
Speaking of pink, darling, this blog post wouldn’t be complete without a disclaimer! Remember my lifelong goal - to get the entire world twirling in a pink tutu? This trip has truly put that mission to the test! From the charming, cobbled streets of Rome to the majestic Colosseum, I've worn my favourite pink tulle with pride, and, let me tell you, it has been a hit! The Romans are warm, friendly, and love a bit of fun, and the reaction to my pink tutu has been phenomenal. I even had a delightful encounter with a street vendor who was selling scarves and handbags - he absolutely loved my tutu! He insisted I try on a pink scarf and offered me the best bargain - a cheeky, fun exchange, filled with laughter and genuine joy.
Now, let's get to the heart of this post – my adventures in the heart of the Eternal City! This week has been packed with culture, charm, and enough pizza and gelato to fuel a ballet company. Let me whisk you through my highlights!
Day One: Ancient Wonders and Artistic Enchantment
I kicked off my Roman escapade with a trip to the Colosseum. This magnificent amphitheatre is simply breathtaking! Standing within its ancient walls, you can practically feel the echoes of history, hear the roars of the crowd, and imagine the gladiatorial battles that once took place. A powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of humanity. After that, it was time to dive into the world of Renaissance art! I was enchanted by the Vatican City, exploring the intricate artistry of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and the awe-inspiring beauty of St. Peter's Basilica. The paintings, sculptures, and architecture truly make you appreciate the immense skill and creativity of the Italian masters.
Day Two: Exploring Trastevere's Charming Heart
The next day, I ventured into the lively, artistic neighbourhood of Trastevere, renowned for its cobblestone streets, bustling trattorias, and romantic atmosphere. It's a hidden gem, overflowing with authentic Italian charm. I spent hours browsing the quaint boutiques, admiring the handcrafted jewellery and colorful scarves, and, of course, I had to treat myself to a new scarf in a shade of pink, just to match my tutu! In the evening, I wandered through the narrow streets, soaking up the lively atmosphere, the sound of laughter and conversations filling the air. The perfect way to end the day - dinner at a local trattoria, indulging in the tastiest pasta and the most heavenly tiramisu!
Day Three: Fashion Fiesta and a Touch of Romance
Rome is a fashion paradise! I made sure to spend an afternoon at the Spanish Steps, an iconic location for fashionistas, and I've never felt so fabulous surrounded by such stunning clothes! It’s the perfect location to feel inspired and observe street fashion - from elegant ladies in chic dresses to modern trendsetters in edgy ensembles, every outfit tells a story. The highlight of this day, though, was my ballet class. Yes, I found a ballet studio hidden in a charming courtyard and spent the afternoon dancing in a flurry of pink, the twirl of my tutu reflecting the soft light. A moment of pure joy and creative expression!
Day Four: A Journey Back in Time
Today, we take a journey into Rome's ancient history. I'm at the Pantheon, one of the most remarkable structures in the world. This majestic building, a masterpiece of Roman architecture, has withstood the test of time, and stands as a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of a bygone era. I've spent hours walking through its vast space, admiring the intricate details, feeling its power and beauty, and of course, trying to capture it all in photographs - I'm quite proud of my photography skills and I love creating Instagram-worthy pictures of myself twirling in my pink tutu in front of such grand settings!
Day Five: A Symphony of Taste and Flavors
Today, my taste buds are getting a royal treat - the Roman food scene is truly delicious! I started the day at the Campo de' Fiori market, a lively and colourful open-air market teeming with vendors selling everything from fresh produce and artisan cheeses to beautifully crafted flowers and souvenirs. It’s a perfect place to experience authentic Italian flavour. I indulged in a generous serving of freshly made pasta and finished off my culinary journey with the most incredible gelato - it was a sweet and delicious masterpiece, a vibrant blend of flavors, each one bursting with sunshine and happiness!
Day Six: A Glimpse into Ballet's Beauty
Today was an extra special day because I went to see a ballet performance! My fellow ballet enthusiasts know this is an absolute highlight of any trip. The theater was beautiful and the show itself was magical! I can't wait to talk more about it next week.
Day Seven: Reflecting on a Magical Journey
I'm sitting at a cozy café in Piazza Navona, the scent of fresh coffee and freshly baked pastries filling the air, a gentle breeze carrying the sound of music from the nearby streets. This city, with its stunning beauty, rich history, and warmth of its people, has stolen my heart. I've fallen head over heels in love with the magic and romance of Rome!
And, yes, it's time for a confession, darling! The other highlight of this week was that one very special moment - while browsing a boutique in the Trastevere district, I found the most incredible vintage pink tutu. It was an old lace creation, like something straight out of a ballet fairytale! It instantly reminded me of the tutus my grandmother used to sew for me, her needles making that rhythmic, gentle sound I still adore. Now, this darling, is not just any pink tutu, it’s an heirloom, and I just had to take it home with me. It will be a treasured piece, a reminder of the beauty I encountered in Rome!
