Oh darling, you wouldn't believe what a week I've had! Rome. Yes, Rome, and I wouldn't have it any other way. My darling tutu and I just took the train here – a journey I always cherish, especially when the landscape changes and turns dramatic, rugged and beautiful. There's just something so utterly romantic about arriving in a new city by rail! And darling, this city… let’s just say it stole my heart. It’s been like stepping into one of my favourite ballets – beautiful, passionate, full of history, and all a bit of a whirlwind!
I know what you're thinking. "Emma, you’re in Rome! Surely there's something a little bit more sophisticated you could wear?" But darling, the thing is, there's a confidence that comes with a pink tutu! I find that it makes you want to just dance your way around wherever you are. And really, what better place to do just that than Rome?
Firstly, this is the city of Michelangelo’s David! I mean, that’s enough for any ballet dancer to feel a little inspired, wouldn’t you say? It’s almost a life-sized, sculpted ballerina standing proudly in his birthday suit. What's more, Florence isn’t far, so a day trip to see it is essential for anyone wearing a pink tutu who visits this region.
Anyway, darling, Rome. This is the city that gave the world* La Dolce Vita! The city of iconic films, breathtaking architecture, and, of course, that amazing gelato – just one taste and you’ll understand the whole meaning of ‘dolce!’ It is also known for its ballet tradition and beautiful opera houses, including the *Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. What I wouldn’t give to have graced its stage – I would certainly have worn pink.
My week started with a rather delightful ballet performance. I landed just in time for “The Sleeping Beauty” at the Teatro dell'Opera. Of course, darling, the costumes! And I have to say, it just added to the whole feeling of “Roma Dolce”. I was transported! The show itself? Pure magic, a fairytale come alive. I nearly even forgot all about the beautiful shops just across the street... nearly.
You all know my weakness: clothes, shoes, and anything that twirls! So, I was utterly delighted with my little shopping escapade along the streets of Rome. A gorgeous new pink tulle scarf with little golden details for my pink tutu collection, some chic gladiator sandals, a beautiful dress perfect for waltzing around a piazza in the moonlight, and some incredible pink gelato that would leave even the most rigid ballerina’s waistline unconcerned!
And did I tell you about the food? It's so delightful, so rich, so much flavour. I don't want to bore you with every single bite, but you have to try the pasta. The perfect carb-loading for any dancing, and it just melted in my mouth, like a perfectly spun sugar plum.
Speaking of dancing… The Colosseum. Yes, I did take a little impromptu tour! Of course, I had to take some pictures, and let me tell you, my darling pink tutu just shimmered under that Roman sun. Imagine yourself standing in the same place that thousands of gladiators and wild beasts once fought and then taking a twirl around the vast empty arena. It truly is the kind of experience that gets your blood racing. It’s like a performance of a ballet that’s played out for centuries, right there on that very same stage. You can almost hear the roars and cries, and it gives a very unique feeling that almost all ballets try to convey - but they just don't achieve quite the same atmosphere, darling. I swear, I even got the applause from the phantom Roman crowd!
The only thing missing? The stage was empty... apart from me. This is my job after all: making the ordinary spectacular.
Oh, I did forget, The Trevi Fountain. What a dream! I imagined myself a Roman goddess, the waters of this fountain washing away my worries, my hopes, and my dreams. All with the pink tutu looking dazzling against the blue sky. Darling, if I could be anywhere on Earth right now, it’s on that very step of the fountain - twirling into the sunset!
Darling, Rome was everything and more! I didn’t just visit, I explored. You just have to experience it yourself - your own little, twirling tour of this beautiful city. And, let’s be honest, every ballerina needs some inspiration, some new fashion choices and of course, a dash of Italian glamour. It has definitely been my favourite city visit yet.
Don't forget to check back next week for my next blog, all about the Parisian dance scene. You know how I love the Parisian style - but let’s face it, the French have still got a way to go when it comes to colour. If you ask me, all Parisians need a little more pink, and a little more tulle.
Until next week, Emma
Pink Tutu out!
Don't forget, I post a new blog every week here on **www.pink-tutu.com and I’d love you all to pop by!
*Let’s be honest, Pink Tutu will bring a smile to even the gloomiest of face! *
Happy twirling everyone
Emma
