Ciao Bella!
The Italian sun is shining on my pink tutu as I sit here in the heart of Rome, writing this blog post. This week has been a whirlwind of stunning sights, delicious food, and of course, breathtaking ballet performances. Oh, and did I mention the incredible shopping? You know I just couldn't resist!
This is week number three of my Roman adventure, and I'm already smitten with this vibrant, history-filled city. Every corner seems to whisper with stories from centuries past, and every street is alive with music, laughter, and the chatter of friendly locals. And of course, the food… Mamma mia!
The Italian passion for life, for art, for food, is something I find utterly captivating. This trip is a far cry from the peaceful English countryside I call home - the bustling streets and chaotic energy of Rome have stolen a piece of my heart already. I’ve even been tempted to pick up a bit of Italian, which as a Derbyshire lass, let me tell you, is a real achievement. But enough about my adventures in romance (language-wise, of course!), let me tell you all about my wonderful time here in the Eternal City!
Ballet by the BasilicaThis week was a ballet bonanza! On Tuesday, I saw a performance at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma - I mean, what a venue! I wasn’t sure what to expect as the building was breathtaking, all golden-edged windows and velvet drapes. Inside, I found myself in an almost regal theatre, the stage gleaming under the lights and the orchestra preparing to bring the music to life. The dancers, elegant and graceful in their flowing tutus, seemed to dance on air. It was mesmerising!
I fell completely in love with a performance by the talented Italian dancer, Marco Di Leo, whose portrayal of a forlorn knight stole the show. It was quite the evening of romance, and I've been trying to replicate some of his movements in my own daily dance practice (although with slightly less grand results). It was wonderful to see how ballet can weave a captivating story through its movement. The story, as told by Marco’s dance, resonated with my Derbyshire heart, with themes of courage and duty being expressed through delicate steps. It left me inspired and brimming with creativity!
But my Italian dance adventures didn't stop there! On Thursday, I stumbled upon a performance of 'Giselle' by the Ballet di Roma right outside the stunning Basilica di San Clemente. The backdrop was as awe-inspiring as the performance itself. As the sun dipped below the horizon, bathing the city in a golden glow, the ballet unfolded in front of the Basilica's historic walls, offering a perfect combination of old-world charm and artistic brilliance.
Fashion Flair on Via CondottiYou can't come to Italy without indulging in the delights of its fashion scene! It would be unpardonable to miss it! This weekend, I found myself lost in the charming cobblestone streets of the upscale shopping district, Via Condotti. This chic little lane has some of the most exclusive stores, making it a dream come true for a pink tutu-loving ballerina.
Imagine my delight when I discovered a charming little boutique, called 'La Bella Ballerina'. Imagine my delight when I found my own colour - pink, in fact - a glorious blush that looked as good against my pale complexion as the soft sunshine of an Italian summer. This time, though, my purse wouldn't allow for another fabulous tutu - my recent spree was a little excessive, so I treated myself to a pair of the most wonderful sparkly pink ballet flats! I swear, you can never have too many pink shoes, especially when you have an ever-growing collection of tutus back home in Derbyshire.
The boutique's owner, a warm and spirited Italian woman named Giovanna, told me all about her love for dance and the inspiration behind her collection. I absolutely loved talking to her, we chatted all about ballet shows, our favourite fashion finds, and she even showed me a secret balcony tucked away in her boutique overlooking the most charming little street cafe, just begging for a pink tutu, a glass of Italian wine, and an hour of people-watching. It was absolute bliss, and, Giovanna being a kind soul, I made it a perfect ballet afternoon.
Eating like a Queen (Well, almost)Of course, no Roman adventure is complete without experiencing the culinary delights that Italy offers. I've been savoring everything from creamy carbonara and fresh seafood to heavenly gelato, the last of which I was lucky enough to find on a side street close to a park, hidden away like a delicious little secret. The taste, oh, the taste was pure heaven!
I even attempted a home-cooked meal with the help of some locals who took pity on my efforts (let's just say that even in a tutu, I’m not known for my kitchen skills!) Their recipes are secret and passed down from generations, but, I promised to make a Derbyshire version in return for their help - though I think the Yorkshire Pudding might get lost in translation, unfortunately! The whole experience felt a bit like being back in the days when a few hundred years ago the Romans ruled Derbyshire!
I've also been making the most of my Italian stay by trying the most decadent and creative pastries. Yesterday, I ventured to a cafe in the charming little Piazza Navona. I swear, the sheer amount of options - panna cotta, biscotti, pasticcini – is mind-boggling! You could spend a lifetime trying every dessert in Italy! After much deliberation, I chose a delicately flavoured panna cotta sprinkled with pistachios and a beautiful selection of dainty, brightly colored biscuits that made me smile - like little edible bonbons! It was divine.
My Italian DreamAs the day draws to a close and the twilight paints the Roman sky in shades of orange and pink, I sit here with a sense of contentment. It feels surreal to think I'm actually living my dream, travelling the world, experiencing different cultures, sharing my love for ballet with you, and of course, spreading the joy of pink tutus everywhere I go.
It feels truly wonderful. I might not be able to wear my pink tutu all the time – but as a rule, I like to think that it always lurks just behind my sensible, everyday clothes, waiting to make a grand entrance when the opportunity presents itself.
I’m really loving this Italian adventure. So join me again next Wednesday for another week's worth of ballet fun and frolics right here in Rome. Until then, remember to twirl, to embrace your inner ballerina, and most importantly, to find your own inner pink tutu, darlings!
Ci vediamo! (See you later!)
