Well, darlings, here I am, in the Eternal City itself, Rome! I finally made it, after weeks of planning and weeks of performances at the gorgeous Derwent Valley Arts Centre back home in Derbyshire. My tutu repertoire had to be at its absolute best to pay for this trip, but it was all worth it. Just one whiff of that delicious Italian air as I stepped off the train at Roma Termini and my heart soared. This city, it sings, you know? Even the exhaust fumes sound melodic!
Let's rewind a little bit. My journey here started with a deliciously exciting train ride. I adore travelling by train, especially on long journeys. It gives me a chance to people watch, write in my journal, read a good book, and yes, even do a few little pirouettes in the aisle when no one’s looking! (I’ve mastered the art of hiding my tutu underneath a thick, plush travel rug – discretion is key, my dears!). I found the train itself, sleek and silver, had this magical aura to it, whisking me away to a land of history and charm. The views, oh the views! Past rolling hills, sleepy villages, and glistening vineyards – it was pure fairytale material!
Landing in Rome was an absolute whirlwind. The streets are alive with energy! A riot of vibrant colours, friendly faces, and the most amazing street performers. I swear I saw a mime doing the splits on a scooter – you can't get more dramatic than that, can you? Of course, I was already feeling a little Italian with my fabulous new blush-pink Valentino clutch bag I bought especially for this trip, and my trusty pink ballet shoes. (You simply cannot explore Rome without wearing pink, darling! The colour is just perfect against the ancient stones and ochre-coloured buildings.) And that's not even mentioning my glorious bubblegum pink tulle skirt that billowed like a dream as I wandered down the cobbled streets!
Oh, the food! I had to try the pasta carbonara, didn’t I? It was absolutely heaven – creamy, cheesy, and so very moreish! My tummy was truly delighted. And, the gelato? I could happily eat gelato every single day, without a single pang of guilt, especially here in Rome where every flavour seems to sing! It’s like a symphony of taste on your tongue!
Today's exploration brought me to the awe-inspiring Colosseum. What a structure! I was in complete awe, picturing all those gladiators fighting within those walls. My imagination was running wild! Imagine being a part of that vibrant and ferocious crowd – I'd be in my element, no doubt about it. You can really feel the echoes of the past there. And don't even get me started on the Trevi Fountain. It's a true beauty – that exquisite, intricate carving, the sheer size of it all! I spent a good fifteen minutes gazing at it, admiring the way the sun played off the water. I even did a little pirouette and threw a coin over my shoulder – fingers crossed, I'll be back! After all, everyone needs a little "Ciao, Roma" in their life!
Tomorrow, I'm heading to the Vatican City – a dream I’ve had ever since I first dreamt of dancing in Rome! I can’t wait to see St. Peter’s Basilica, all that incredible art and the Sistine Chapel! There’s a certain kind of magical aura that surrounds those beautiful, spiritual places. Perhaps it will inspire me to add a bit more twirling to my routine – and maybe a little heavenly ballet inspired by Michelangelo’s masterpieces? You'll have to wait until next week to see what I've cooked up!
This evening, however, I have a special treat in store – I'm off to see the famous Bolshoi Ballet at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. I was fortunate to get tickets! I can't wait for the artistry, the elegance, the pure brilliance of it all. I'm sure it’ll be spectacular, with incredible dancers, shimmering costumes, and a breathtaking setting! I can almost imagine the swirling tulle and the majestic, uplifting music!
I promise to tell you all about it in my next blog. Until then, keep on twirling, darling!
