Hello my darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! This week, I'm bringing you a slice of la dolce vita from the eternal city, Rome!
This week's Wednesday adventure is extra special because we are embarking on a whole week in this fabulous city. That means plenty of gelato, beautiful architecture, and of course, a whole lot of pink tutu-ing!
For those of you who are new to Pink Tutu, I’m Emma, a ballerina from the rolling hills of Derbyshire, and my mission is to spread joy and colour by inspiring everyone to embrace the beauty of a pink tutu! Whether it’s a classic tulle masterpiece or a funky, modern take on the style, a pink tutu is all about expressing your inner ballerina and embracing that fabulous side of yourself.
You know I’m absolutely buzzing about this trip! It’s all thanks to a brilliant show I recently performed in at the Buxton Festival. As you know, I make sure all my travelling is funded by my ballet, because dancing makes me the happiest in the world, and I feel so lucky to use this incredible passion to explore our planet.
So, onto this week’s adventure… We touched down in Rome yesterday, and it's like stepping into a postcard! The warmth, the delicious smells, and those gorgeous old buildings – I just know this is going to be an amazing adventure. I can't resist popping on my bright pink tutu every time we arrive at a new location. It brings me such joy to see the local people's faces light up, a wave of joy just spreads through the streets as people take notice of a pink tutu whirling past.
For my first stop, I had to see the Trevi Fountain. Honestly, it's even more breathtaking in person! I was so captivated, it was just a blur of beautiful sculptures and glittering water. Did I mention my fabulous pink tutu, complete with an emerald green ribbon? It felt right at home amongst all the Baroque architecture and marble. Of course, I tossed a coin over my shoulder to ensure I come back again one day (I hope it’s in a pink tutu again!)
I am swooning over the local gelato, I must tell you. You can’t even imagine the explosion of flavors! We tried lemon and basil gelato – so zesty and refreshing – and pistacchio gelato – smooth and creamy like you've never tasted before! My inner ballerina was doing a little dance as I savoured each mouthful, so divine. (And I might have also grabbed an extra scoop to go, you can’t just leave that gelato, especially if it’s pink.)
Rome is a shopping haven. We found ourselves wandering the charming boutiques in the Monti district yesterday. The city feels like an explosion of fashion – a beautiful mess! I scooped up a gorgeous beaded clutch, a pair of rose-gold earrings and, of course, a beautiful lavender scarf to complement my wardrobe, even in winter, a splash of colour makes everything more magical!
Our big day out for today is visiting the Vatican! We are heading over to the Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica, it’s on our “must-see” list, the Vatican City is just a magnificent masterpiece. I wonder what the local Papal guards will think of a ballerina waltzing around the courtyard in a pink tutu. Maybe they’ll even join me for a dance! It wouldn’t be a Pink Tutu Adventure without a little bit of light-hearted chaos!
Oh, and we are seeing “Swan Lake” at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma tonight. Yes! You heard right, my darlings, ballet in Rome! I am so excited to see how this production interprets this classic masterpiece and I’m feeling inspired! Just thinking about those graceful swans gliding across the stage is giving me the tingles – I just love it.
