Buongiorno from Rome!
This is definitely a #PinkTutuRome dream come true. As I type this, I’m sitting on the sun-drenched terrace of our adorable little apartment in Trastevere, sipping a cappuccino (and yes, it’s every bit as good as I imagined!). It's Wednesday, the 20th of June, 2029, and this is my weekly Pink Tutu update from the Eternal City!
I must say, Rome has lived up to all its hype and then some. I mean, honestly, who doesn’t dream of ancient ruins, cobbled streets, delicious food, and a gelato in hand? The air here is buzzing with history and the energy is just…well, electric!
But enough about the city for a moment… my trip has a unique charm that transcends the usual tourist clichés. I’m on a mission. My pink tutu has travelled across the continent, my ballet shoes have been trodden on ancient marble, and the little ballerina inside me has been soaking it all up. And of course, no trip is complete without shopping.
Here’s what’s been going on this week…
Rome, by Train
The journey here was a pure joy. Travelling by train is such a civilized way to get around. You don't have the stress of the airport, you have time to look out the window at the changing landscape, and it really sets the tone for a relaxed and luxurious holiday. It was the perfect opportunity to slip into a floaty pink maxi dress and of course my trusty pink ballet cardigan for that je ne sais quoi touch. (It always travels with me!)
The Colosseum – More Than Meets the Eye
It wouldn't be Rome without a visit to the Colosseum. It was every bit as awe-inspiring as I imagined - that magnificent history just seems to vibrate from the stones! I wore my bold pink and white stripe top for a bit of colour amidst the grey marble, and my signature tu-tu skirt to twirl my way through history. You just have to twirl in such a magnificent setting! Honestly, it was like I stepped out of a painting!
A Stroll in Trastevere
Trastevere has captured my heart! This bohemian, artistic, and beautiful neighbourhood is like a secret little village tucked away in the heart of the city. I loved wandering through the winding streets, exploring the charming shops and sipping cappuccino in quaint cafes. Of course, I couldn't resist popping into Galleria Trastevere - a gallery that truly embodied the spirit of the neighbourhood. They had a unique collection of hand-crafted items, colourful paintings, and vibrant ceramics, I simply had to grab a little something to remember this charming corner of Rome. It's going straight into my Pink Tutu Rome scrapbook, I can tell you that!
Treasures at Campo de' Fiori
Speaking of markets… Campo de' Fiori was like stepping into a symphony of colours, aromas, and lively Italian chatter. The market is absolutely bursting with fresh produce, colourful flowers, and delicious street food. I absolutely loved the energy of it all and the sheer beauty of the flowers. I even picked up a small bouquet of lilies – perfect to brighten up our apartment!
A Culinary Adventure
Okay, let’s talk food! Oh my gosh, you haven't truly experienced Italian food until you’ve visited Rome. It’s all fresh, full of flavour, and truly authentic. I spent the entire week just exploring – indulging in perfectly-cooked pasta, trying a range of delicious cheeses, and savouring mouthwatering gelato. Oh, the gelato. The sheer selection!
An Evening of Ballet
Rome has an amazing ballet scene. I managed to catch a performance of the Romeo and Juliet ballet. They were spectacular! It’s always so incredible to witness that sheer artistry, strength, and grace on stage. There’s something almost magical about how these performers tell stories through dance, I don’t know…it’s a real moment of true connection for me. The whole performance just sparked my inner ballerina. And I even had the honour of meeting the prima ballerina backstage after the show!
My Fashion Finds in Rome
A pink tutu blog isn’t complete without some fashion inspiration! Rome truly is a haven for fashionistas. I had the most delightful time exploring the shops in Trastevere and the area around Via Condotti, the “Italian Fifth Avenue”.
This week I picked up:
- A silk scarf in a divine shade of lilac – the perfect pop of colour against my black outfit.
- A classic black tote bag with a bold gold chain – to keep all my essentials close at hand. (And a little black tutu bag, of course - just perfect for when I'm out and about)
- A stunning vintage gold chain – you know I have to add to my growing jewellery collection!
A new pair of real leather ballet shoes. My old ones were getting a little worn – these babies are exactly the right kind of ballerina-chic!
My One Regret?
I really regret not finding more pink tutus. This trip was a whirlwind and while I tried to squeeze in every shop in every corner, the time was just slipping by. Luckily, I always bring one pink tutu, which I brought out for the most iconic photo op - at the Trevi Fountain. (You bet I threw a coin over my shoulder - gotta wish for more ballet classes and travels! )
Looking Ahead to Next Week
Rome has really captured my heart. But don't worry - there's lots more to share with you next Wednesday. The beautiful gardens at Villa Borghese, an extra special shopping experience, and the mouth-watering culinary experiences of Rome ( did I mention the food?) are on the agenda.
I’m also trying to see if I can schedule a little ballet class in a true Italian studio while I'm here. Wouldn’t that be fabulous? Think, pink tutu on, flowing through ballet poses against a Roman backdrop…sigh. I know, I know… I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
