Ciao bella! It's Wednesday again and time for another Pink Tutu travel adventure, this time from the heart of Rome! I'm feeling very "La Dolce Vita" as I write this, sat in a sun-drenched café sipping a cappuccino and watching the world go by. My tutu's feeling right at home with all the gorgeous Roman architecture - just like me!
It's a beautiful crisp autumn morning here in Rome. A soft golden light bathes the ancient buildings and I can't resist twirling on the cobblestones, enjoying the feeling of being at the centre of the city's ancient energy.
This week I'm exploring the sights of Rome - the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon - all incredibly impressive structures that leave me utterly captivated by their scale and beauty. I even found a gorgeous shop that had a window full of vintage tutus - how could I resist going in?
The shop, "Balletto Bella," was like stepping into a time machine! It was crammed full of costumes, with sparkling bodices and layered tutus in all shades imaginable. I was in absolute heaven! I even tried on a beautiful powder-pink tutu that perfectly complemented my skin tone, with soft lilac ribbon cascading down the back. It felt so whimsical and romantic - like something straight out of a ballet storybook!
Speaking of storybooks, my visit to Rome wouldn't be complete without a trip to see a ballet. I am completely delighted to announce that the Bolshoi Ballet is currently performing Giselle at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Oh, darling, it was utterly breathtaking!
Giselle’s incredible grace and the Prince's passionate choreography brought me right back to the dance studio - except the theatre was a far grander affair than anything I’ve ever experienced. Imagine the excitement!
The choreography, the costuming, the talent - it was sheer artistry. I sat in my front-row seat, entranced by every movement and feeling the sheer beauty of the music and dance flowing over me. You truly couldn't ask for a better ballet experience! I even spotted a few stylish ladies in their own fabulous pink tutus! I have to admit, they got my heart fluttering! I mean, I do have an entire blog dedicated to tutus, don’t I?
Oh, the delights of the Italian capital. Where do I even start? Well, darling, no trip to Rome is complete without a truly exquisite, delectable shopping experience.
This morning, I took myself off to a vintage clothing boutique just a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps. The shop owner, a charming old lady named Francesca, had a truly delightful selection of clothes - silk scarves, satin gowns, and, most importantly, vintage ballerina shoes! And you won't believe this: she had a display window full of perfectly restored pink tutus! My heart absolutely skipped a beat! It was a tutu paradise! I spent a whole hour chatting to Francesca, soaking up the style secrets of an Italian fashionista. I even managed to find a beautiful vintage pink blouse, and, wouldn't you know it, it was perfect to pair with my vintage tutu for an upcoming performance in the local ballet class! I just know this outfit will go down a treat with everyone!
And if you think that’s all I’ve been up to in Rome, think again! There is so much to explore in this city! I took a train ride today to see the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Honestly, it was a little eerie walking around a frozen-in-time city - a truly humbling and poignant experience. I can't even imagine what it was like to witness such a dramatic event and experience a moment in time that shaped the world. I imagined all the graceful ballerinas that would have lived there before, gliding through the streets... and it almost felt like they were there with me!
Speaking of journeys, trains are a joy to travel on! And this Italian rail journey didn’t disappoint. There is a certain "laissez faire" feeling in Italy, and the trains embody that. People were enjoying their morning espressos and snacks, the journey is all part of the Italian experience! The whole train felt as though it was dancing its way down the line! It definitely reminded me of a performance. It's truly fascinating to observe the diverse cast of characters you meet on a journey – just like in a ballet.
If you're looking for the most exquisite Italian cuisine, darling, then the charming trattorias, family-owned restaurants, and street food vendors around the Piazza Navona offer something to please any tastebud! The smells of delicious pastas, creamy tiramisu, and fragrant pizza fills the air as I wander around the bustling piazza! You just cannot go wrong with an Italian feast!
And did you know that Rome boasts one of the largest street art scenes in the world? After a delightful lunch, I was completely captivated by a street artist near the Piazza Navona creating vibrant masterpieces, using sprays and stencils! So inspiring and such a beautiful art form! It's another kind of "performance" isn't it? The art, the movement, the crowd watching, the creative talent! I felt quite inspired by their work.
As I say my goodbyes for now, my head is full of the beautiful sights and sounds of Rome, my feet are tingling from the many dances in my gorgeous tutus, and my heart is overflowing with gratitude for another beautiful adventure!
