Brixton Calling! (Post #851)

Oh, darling readers! This little bird has flown all the way to Brixton, and what a delightful flutter it’s been! Imagine me, your resident tutu-twirling enthusiast, hopping aboard the train (all plush seats and fancy compartments, of course!) and heading down to the big smoke. Not your average ballet journey, you see, because I’ve been itching to explore a new corner of the city - the bustling streets, the vibrant arts scene, and… of course, the chance to see a fabulous ballet performance!

I must say, even though I'm a country girl at heart, London's always got my heart dancing! It’s such a buzz to see the colourful characters bustling about, to hear the laughter echoing from the street performers, and to soak up the atmosphere of creative energy. And, let’s face it, where else can you grab a delicious cuppa, pop into a vintage boutique for a whimsical hat, and then waltz your way into a ballet theatre all within a few hours? Just one of the reasons London’s firmly placed at the top of my travel list!

This trip was all about my beloved tutus - I mean, what's a ballerina to do without her favourite ballet wear?! This time, I opted for my trusty white tutu – airy, ethereal, and perfectly pink-tinted to catch the late afternoon sunshine! Imagine it swirling around me as I hopped off the train at Brixton station - a twirling, floating vision of joy (if I do say so myself!)!

Brixton itself felt like a sensory explosion – colourful street art, funky market stalls bursting with unique treasures, and the infectious energy of street performers adding a bit of jazz to the whole scene! Honestly, I was like a giddy kid in a candy shop, just soaking up the energy and enjoying the sights! I even got myself a funky vintage pink brooch - a tiny ballet dancer - from one of the stalls to adorn my tutu - a perfect touch for my afternoon adventures!

After a quick lunch of delicious falafel, all pink and delightful, I popped into the Ritzy Picturehouse for their "Brixton Bazaar". A wonderful mix of artisan stalls, craft demos, and a real community feel. There were amazing handmade jewellery designs that would make perfect gifts for my friends back in Derbyshire (and maybe one for me, just saying!), beautiful handmade scarves, and even a stall selling some gorgeous silk ribbons that would be perfect for embellishing a new tutu!

But the main attraction, for this ballet enthusiast, was the Ballet Rambert performance later that evening. You wouldn’t believe it, but the performance was just breathtaking – I was totally transfixed. The dancers were just magical, they were moving with such precision and passion, and the storytelling within the choreography was incredible! The combination of strength, grace, and pure joy - pure magic! It left me utterly spellbound. I must confess, it's always lovely to be reminded why I absolutely adore this art form!

After the performance, it was back to the station - but this time, my journey wouldn’t be on the train! I decided to treat myself to a classic London experience: a beautiful horse-drawn carriage! Just imagine - me in my white tutu, gliding through the night with the sound of clip-clopping hooves and the twinkling city lights illuminating my way. Honestly, it was an absolute dream, the kind of magical memory that’s forever etched in my mind.

Of course, a journey wouldn’t be complete without a little dose of nature, so the next morning I woke early, coffee in hand, to take a stroll through the lush green spaces of Brockley and Nunhead cemeteries. These urban havens were like peaceful pockets of beauty in the city, where squirrels scurried and the sun streamed through the leaves, giving me that extra burst of peaceful energy.

The day ended with one last adventure before heading back to Derbyshire: a spot of wildlife watching at Battersea Park! Who knew that right in the heart of the city there was such a charming haven for all kinds of feathery friends? The sight of ducks, swans, and seagulls mingling alongside the lush greenery was such a peaceful escape - exactly the perfect dose of calm I needed to complete my journey.

And that, my lovelies, is a little snippet of my wonderful trip to Brixton! If you’re planning a trip to London anytime soon, do make sure you pay Brixton a visit – it truly has everything – a bustling arts scene, fascinating culture, and a whole lot of energy that’ll set your heart skipping a beat. I even have a secret tip for you all: if you head to the Brixton Market, pop into a shop called “Lush”, there’s a lovely little stand selling bath bombs shaped like little ballet shoes! Perfect for unwinding after a day of city adventures, right?

Now, off I go, to unpack my bag (stuffed with souvenirs!) and dream of my next dance-tastic adventure – which, just so you know, will likely involve a pink tutu. Because life's always better when you’re twirling!

Until next time, lovelies!

Love,

Emma xxx
