Hello my lovely Tutu Tribe! It's your favourite Derbyshire girl, Emma, writing to you from the heart of Alberta, Canada. I've traded in my usual Derbyshire hills for the vast prairies and rolling countryside of Edmonton, a city known for its wide-open spaces, incredible wildlife, and surprisingly vibrant ballet scene!
Riding the Rails to Tutu Wonderland
The journey itself was a delight! As you all know, I adore a good train journey - the rhythmic clatter, the unfolding landscapes, and the cosy comfort of a plush carriage. This time, I had the added pleasure of being whisked across the plains on a bright red Canadian Pacific train, complete with comfy armchairs and enormous windows to take in the breathtaking scenery. My pink tutu, of course, was nestled snugly in my bag, just itching to be let loose on this exciting adventure.
A German Tutu Takes Centre Stage
I arrived in Edmonton with a spring in my step (literally!) and an overflowing suitcase bursting with enough tulle to rival the royal wedding. This trip, I've chosen a particular favourite - a stunning German tutu, handmade by a little independent shop tucked away in Munich. The craftsmanship is exquisite - layers and layers of delicate fabric in a blush pink, with sparkling crystal embellishments catching the sunlight. It's like a fluffy pink cloud I just can't resist swirling around in.
Edmonton's Ballet Magic
Edmonton boasts a fantastic ballet company - Alberta Ballet. The moment I set foot in the theatre, the air buzzed with excitement and the hushed anticipation that only ballet can evoke. My German tutu felt right at home among the beautiful costumes and glittering stage lights.
Ballet Under the Big Sky
The performance was phenomenal! We watched a modern piece with themes of nature and the power of the wild. It was almost like the choreographers had been inspired by the vast Canadian prairies themselves - with swirling movements mirroring the movement of the wind across the grasslands, and leaps reminiscent of a graceful wild stallion galloping across the plains. The energy in the theatre was palpable, leaving me completely inspired.
An Edmonton Tutu Tale
In the bustling city centre, I met with a local fashionista who turned out to be a fellow tutu enthusiast. She even runs a popular shop that caters to those of us who like to embrace a touch of tutu in our everyday outfits. We spent the afternoon chatting, sharing tips on where to find the best tutus, and exchanging stories about our shared love of ballet. She introduced me to the exciting "Ballet Street" scene here, a street party filled with dance, music, and performers dressed in tutus of all colours.
Prairie Paradise
While Edmonton is a captivating city, no visit would be complete without exploring the natural wonders of its surroundings. I took a scenic horseback ride through the foothills, my pink tutu flowing gently in the wind. The view of the Rocky Mountains, towering in the distance, was awe-inspiring. We galloped through meadows bursting with wildflowers and saw deer gracefully leaping across the path, reminding me of the balletic movements I practise every day.
From City Lights to Wildlife Encounters
Later that week, I headed to Elk Island National Park. It's home to herds of elk, buffalo, and a variety of birdlife. I spent a couple of days soaking up the serenity of the wilderness, watching the majestic elk grazing peacefully in the open fields. My pink tutu certainly stood out amongst the vibrant greenery, but everyone I met was incredibly welcoming and intrigued by its unexpected presence in this natural haven.
Every Day is Tutu Day
Whether I'm on a city street, at the ballet theatre, or exploring a wilderness paradise, my pink tutu is a reminder to embrace my femininity, be bold, and never stop chasing my dreams. So, dear readers, I urge you all to wear your tutus with pride and let your inner ballerina shine!
