Slough-ing It In My Pink Tutu! 🩰

Hello, my gorgeous lovelies! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina, Emma, here, bringing you Post #4172 straight from the heart of… Slough? Yes, you heard me right! You never know where a girl in a tutu might end up.

Now, before you go picturing me pirouetting through the muddy banks of the Thames or attempting a grand jeté across the A4, let me assure you, my mission in Slough wasn't quite as dramatic. It all started with a ballet workshop hosted by the legendary ballerina, Olivia Parker (you might remember her from the Royal Ballet's production of "Swan Lake," where she absolutely killed it!). Naturally, a dance fanatic like myself simply couldn't resist.

So, after packing my lucky pink tutu (the one with the sparkling sequins that makes my inner diva sing), my trusty ballet shoes, and a couple of healthy snacks (a girl's gotta keep her energy levels up!), I hopped on the train from Derby. It was a beautiful, bright autumn morning, the sun casting long shadows through the fields as the train glided through the rolling hills of my beautiful Derbyshire. Oh, the inspiration it gives me, our countryside!

But Slough? I'm not going to lie, Slough isn't exactly the first place that comes to mind when thinking of "ballet mecca". It's not like, say, Paris or New York where ballet seems to pulse through every street corner. But then again, maybe that's exactly why Olivia Parker chose to hold the workshop there – to inspire a new generation of dancers who might never have even considered ballet before.

And what a delightful little surprise Slough turned out to be! There were so many interesting characters I encountered, from a lovely lady walking her greyhound in a floral tutu (talk about embracing your inner ballerina!), to a young boy who nervously peeked in through the windows of the dance studio. I even had a delightful chat with the lady who worked at the local sweet shop about her favourite childhood memories of "Swan Lake"!

You know what, my dear lovelies? Sometimes, the magic happens in the most unexpected places. The ballet studio itself was tucked away on a quiet side street, painted a vibrant pink and looking oh so pretty and inviting with a string of lights strung up over the windows. As soon as I stepped through the door, the scent of freshly polished wooden floors and a warm welcome hit me, just like that magical feeling I get when I enter a real theatre. It’s all about the feeling you create, don’t you think?

The workshop was truly divine. Olivia shared her knowledge and passion in such a way that I couldn’t help but be swept away by her energy. She taught us a beautiful piece from her own choreography, combining elegant, flowing movements with sharp, dynamic transitions. I felt every muscle working, my mind focused and completely immersed in the moment, and I felt like I was flying. That's the amazing thing about ballet, right? It makes you feel like you can achieve anything.

Of course, there were a few bumps in the road, as with all things in life! (You wouldn't think ballet could involve quite so many awkward falls and a little bit of… let's just say 'controlled chaos' - at least it wasn't as embarrassing as falling out of the horse-drawn carriage I travelled in on my last trip to France! Let's not even talk about how my hat landed on the other side of the country!). But that's just part of the joy of it all, learning to laugh at ourselves and persevere, especially when surrounded by so many friendly faces and encouraging voices. It's all about the journey, after all.

By the end of the workshop, I felt completely energised and empowered. Even the train journey back home, although longer than usual due to a slight delay caused by… well, you can imagine (my life never seems to be without a little bit of unexpected), didn’t feel like a drag. In fact, it was filled with a certain sense of triumph, a feeling that comes only after experiencing that intense joy of ballet. And wouldn't you know it, even the lady sitting across from me seemed to get a little bit of the ballet spirit as she started tapping her feet to the music from my headphones, swaying ever so slightly! (And it didn't even take a pink tutu!)

And that's the magic of it all, you know. It's not just about the tutus and the dancing. It's about the feeling of connection, the feeling of belonging, and the feeling that anything is possible, no matter where you are or what you look like. You don’t need a specific place to dance, you don't need a specific set of skills to feel the joy of it all. And honestly? I reckon every single person on this earth should try ballet, if only once, just to feel the sheer freedom that comes from it. I mean, look at how many people loved their Zumba phase. It’s about embracing the rhythm in you and expressing it in whatever way feels right.

And who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be back in Slough with my trusty pink tutu, teaching my very own workshop to inspire a new generation of passionate dancers! Until then, you can catch me pirouetting around Derby, exploring the latest ballet performance in my local theatre, and of course, spreading the pink tutu love wherever I go. After all, as long as you have a twinkle in your eye and a big heart full of passion, then even the most unassuming place can be transformed into a stage for your own, very special ballet!

Until next time, lovelies,

Emma x
