Hello, darlings! Emma here, back with another installment of my #TutuTravels diary! Today, I'm bringing you some fairytale magic straight from the heart of County Durham – Bishop Auckland, to be exact!
As many of you know, my love for tutus is an undying passion, and it's even deeper when it comes to finding those twirly treasures with a touch of magic. And what better way to achieve that than with a fairy themed tutu? I'm talking shimmering sparkles, delicate tulle layers, and maybe even a touch of pixie dust (who knows!). This beauty came with wings, because even in the ordinary world, a girl's gotta fly, right?
My journey to Bishop Auckland was nothing short of a charming fairy tale itself! I opted for a scenic train journey, watching the green rolling hills of Derbyshire morph into the picturesque North Pennines. It was so calming, a perfect way to settle into a day of exploration and creativity.
Reaching Bishop Auckland, I was struck by the grand, gothic architecture of Auckland Castle, which instantly transported me to another time. Its history, dating back centuries, gave me chills! I even took a peek into the castle’s opulent dining hall - talk about a fit for a princess!
But you know me, darling - my favourite parts are always about exploring the city's hidden gems. There are quaint little independent shops tucked away, bursting with vintage finds and artisan treasures. I managed to snagged a hand-painted, miniature teacup, a perfect memento of my visit.
One of the things that I adore about this town is its connection to the incredible artist, Anthony Gormley, who famously created the 'Angel of the North' (and I’m totally considering rocking up there in a tutu - watch this space!). It's this cultural side to Bishop Auckland that just screams 'magic' and I wanted to embrace it fully.
Later in the day, I headed towards the enchanting Bishop Auckland Town Hall. Its stunning architecture and elegant interior gave off real fairy-tale vibes - especially for a tutu-clad gal like me! The sunlight streaming through its stained glass windows was so dreamy, like something straight out of a fairytale book. I just had to get some Insta-worthy pics with my gorgeous tutu. It was picture perfect, wouldn’t you agree?
My exploration also included a visit to the stunning Bishop Auckland Town Hall. That's where I caught a glimpse of a stunning piece of street ballet that blew me away! It was like a modern day interpretation of those fantastical stories I read as a kid. I watched in awe, mesmerized by the ballerina's elegance and passion. Honestly, it sparked a serious craving for my next dance class, even more than usual.
I'm a sucker for a good, old-fashioned wildlife park and the beautiful Auckland Castle's grounds definitely delivered. I lost myself in the captivating world of creatures big and small - everything from graceful deer to adorable red squirrels. I felt such a deep sense of peace and tranquility being surrounded by the beauty of nature. It was the perfect reminder that even the busiest city can harbor moments of stillness and wonder.
And just to add an extra dollop of sweetness to my Bishop Auckland adventure, I discovered a quaint café with the most beautiful homemade cakes and delicious hot chocolate (in pink, of course). It was the perfect way to wrap up a perfect day!
As always, dear readers, it's the connections and the friendships that really make travel so special. My afternoon was enhanced by a chance encounter with a local artist, who happened to be creating breathtaking art pieces using old lace and fabric - and needless to say, the conversation quickly veered towards a shared passion for vintage finds, beautiful patterns and tutus, of course. It’s a crazy world and a beautiful one at that!
Here’s my tip for fellow adventurers: Don't be afraid to get lost in the charm and whimsy of places you explore. Let your intuition guide you and you never know what you'll find. The world is full of untold stories, waiting to be uncovered.
Until next time, my lovely readers, remember to live life in colour, embrace the joy of movement, and keep your dreams in your hearts – because a sprinkle of magic is always in the air!
