Darling, the month of February is always a whirlwind of artistic delights and let me tell you, this year has been no exception! We’re all positively en pointe here at The Studio, and our dance cards are brimming with glittering evenings at the world’s most fabulous ballets and productions. From the frost-kissed peaks of the Austrian Alps to the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean, February has truly taken us on a global journey through the artistry of dance.

Vienna State Opera: Giselle

Oh my darlings, we started the month with a stunning performance of Giselle at the Vienna State Opera. Now, Vienna is synonymous with romance, isn’t it? So naturally, the sheer elegance of the production was truly breathtaking. The staging, with its shimmering snow-dusted backdrop, brought to mind the fairytale landscapes of my youth. But it was the dancing that truly held my attention, with an incandescent Nina Kaptsova as Giselle. Her grace was beyond compare; her performance simply radiant. Of course, one must mention the exquisite corps de ballet – like ethereal wisps of smoke, they danced as one. My darling, their beauty left me spellbound. This Giselle truly embodied the tragic, yet hauntingly beautiful, tale, and the music simply soared, reminding us of the unparalleled beauty and elegance that makes Vienna so unforgettable. Oh, the memories!

Royal Opera House, Covent Garden: Manon

We hopped on the Eurostar next for a glittering evening at the Royal Opera House. And who do we see gracing the stage? None other than the radiant Natalia Osipova as Manon! She absolutely shimmered, with that intoxicating blend of innocence and passion that only she can deliver. The story is simply heartbreaking – we were all en pointe with emotion – and Natalia, well, she embodies Manon's allure so perfectly. Every nuance of Manon's tragic downfall, every whispered yearning for a life beyond the walls of a convent, she conveyed with such breathtaking sensitivity. And then we have the choreography - it was sheer poetry in motion. Every step, every gesture was both elegant and exhilarating. One almost forgets about the music, as the dance takes over, leaving us in its thrall. We absolutely adore you, Natalia!

La Scala, Milan: La Bayadère

From the opulent Covent Garden we jetted to the majestic La Scala. Now, La Bayadère is an absolute favourite and I’ve seen it more times than I can count. Yet, there’s a sense of magic that this timeless tale always evokes. Let’s just say the production in Milan was superb. Every detail - from the majestic set design to the intricate costumes - felt imbued with that Italian opulence we all adore. We simply adore the beautiful and talented Alessandra Ferri, who embodied the character of Nikiya, conveying both passion and tragedy with her usual extraordinary grace. Her famous "death scene" will haunt your dreams – and your heart! Then of course we had the wonderful corps de ballet. Their impeccable precision was breathtaking - a true spectacle of dazzling choreography. My darlings, this performance simply transcended the ordinary.

San Carlo Theatre, Naples: Swan Lake

February brought us an unforgettable performance of Swan Lake at Naples’ illustrious San Carlo Theatre. Let’s be honest, every ballet lover has a place in their heart for Swan Lake and this particular rendition was positively dazzling. The choreography was utterly masterful, evoking a sense of ethereal beauty. And what an exceptional performance we were treated to! With a passionate Olga Smirnova as Odette/Odile, she danced with such artistry – it simply took our breath away. Each gesture, each leap was so flawless and her elegant command of Tchaikovsky's immortal score was truly stunning. Naples is known for its fiery passion and this performance simply radiated that captivating energy, weaving an unforgettable story with its breathtaking dance sequences and its magnificent finale.

Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow: Romeo and Juliet

Oh, darlings, we certainly couldn’t miss Romeo and Juliet at the Bolshoi! A quintessential ballet, this timeless tale of star-crossed lovers is truly a dance lover’s delight. What makes this ballet so enduring, though, is the intensity of the emotional connection between Romeo and Juliet – and that’s exactly what we experienced. Now, when it comes to a dance duo that captures the passion and despair of Romeo and Juliet like nobody else, it's the divine Svetlana Zakharova and the incomparable Vladislav Lantratov, darling! And they were utterly magical on the Moscow stage! Zakharova was, as always, the epitome of grace and elegance. But oh, the raw power of her Juliet took my breath away. And Lantratov? He was absolutely enchanting. We've never seen Romeo portrayed with such effortless beauty and strength. This couple absolutely melted our hearts with their electrifying chemistry. My darling, they are simply magical, their performance unforgettable!

Theatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro: Don Quixote

From Moscow we travelled all the way to the heart of Brazil for a show that truly captured the spirit of Carnaval: a fabulous production of Don Quixote at Rio de Janeiro’s beautiful Theatro Municipal! My darling, imagine! A kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and joyous melodies! The dancing was pure delight - full of life and humour – with just a touch of romanticism for good measure! I was charmed by the wonderfully engaging performance of Gabriela Silva, who captured both the mischief and grace of Kitri. It was the kind of performance that makes you want to dance all night!

A New Discovery: L’Opera di Roma

While on our journey through Europe, we were thrilled to stumble upon an amazing discovery. Let me tell you about it darling: L’Opera di Roma presented a magnificent evening of contemporary ballet, choreographed by the legendary Alexander Ekman. I was, my darling, utterly enthralled by his captivating work! The dance was filled with dynamic energy and surprising theatricality, leaving us mesmerized by its contemporary take on the timeless story. My darling, we were truly delighted with this discovery and are already looking forward to future productions.

But wait, my darling, it gets even better. February, as it often does, was packed with amazing shows that go beyond the world of traditional ballet. Let me introduce you to a few productions that truly stole our hearts:

The National Theatre, London: In My Body

My darling, I simply had to see the production of "In My Body" at the National Theatre, an exquisite exploration of contemporary movement and self-expression directed by the wonderfully gifted Candoco Dance Company. It was a breathtaking spectacle - raw, powerful and so beautifully thought-provoking. The choreography was stunning - each movement had purpose and meaning, evoking a profound sense of connection and vulnerability. The performers’ artistry was truly captivating - we felt every tremor of emotion, every struggle, and every triumph in the way they used their bodies as instruments of expression. It was a dance production that stayed with us long after the curtain call! My darling, let’s just say, I’m still dreaming about those magnificent performances.

La Villette, Paris: The Red Shoes

In the city of lights we witnessed the enchanting musical production of "The Red Shoes". My darling, we’ve always loved the story and it simply came to life before our very eyes. This production was so imaginative, captivating our hearts and transporting us to a world of magic and fantasy. With its spectacular sets and costumes, and an incredible cast of talented performers, this musical left us utterly spellbound. The vibrant music and the dazzling choreography, not to mention those gorgeous shoes - my darling, this was a truly memorable experience.
