#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time ā Ballet Tutu History 1891-08-11! š©°š
Welcome back, lovelies, to my little corner of the internet, Pink-Tutu.com! Today is a special #TutuTuesday ā weāre time-travelling all the way back to August 11th, 1891, and, oh my goodness, are you ready for a treat?!
This weekās journey took me to the heart of Paris, France ā the city of lights and fashion! Think dreamy boulevards, beautiful buildings and a truly enchanting atmosphere, a bit like stepping into a paintingā¦ with an added sprinkle of French joie de vivre, of course! š Now, you might be thinking, āEmma, Paris, fashion... Tell me more about tutus!ā. Well, let me tell you, darling, even in 1891, a good tutu was something quite special, believe you me!
Weāre talking Classical Ballet, you see, a true art form still in its golden age. There were famous dancers gracing the stages ā Marie Taglioni, a legend even in this era, and ballerinas like Fanny Elssler who were practically rock stars in their day! But it wasnāt just about the skill and the artistry; it was also about the breathtaking costumes, and you just couldnāt do ballet without the graceful twirling of a tutu!
Hereās what made 1891 a particularly thrilling year for ballet lovers like myself: The tutu was really coming into its own!
Itās worth remembering, loves, that in this period, the ballerinaās costume was more than just fabric. It was a statement, an expression, an emblem of artistic perfection. And let's be honest, a glorious, twirling display of feminine grace and ethereal beauty, something we still love today!
By 1891, tutus had moved on from their earlier ābell-shapedā designs ā imagine a flowing skirt with an absolutely delightful bustle. Weāre talking about a true transformation in design ā shorter, more lightweight and definitely with a more āfloatingā feel. I just can't imagine any ballerina not twirling with joy!
Think a flowing, elegant, perfectly-structured cloud of tulle, crafted with so much precision. It was a revolution in movement and artistry! A ballet tutu was a true delight to behold ā a cloud of grace on the stage ā just as they are today. I can assure you ā they haven't gone out of fashion! And honestly, my loves, just wait until I tell you about the amazing color choices!
Imagine vibrant pink (my favourite!), blushing peaches, the lightest ivory ā almost transparent, like clouds. And sometimes even the subtlest pops of blue and gold! All colours of elegance and grace, so fitting for this form of art.
Now, just because it was 1891 doesnāt mean weāre talking about dull, outdated fashion, lovelies. No, no! Back then, even the finest silks and fabrics were imported ā the sheer beauty! Remember, itās about finding the perfect mix of elegance and comfort ā essential for any true ballerina!
As a time-travelling tutu enthusiast, let me tell you ā my life was an absolute delight in Paris on the 11th of August, 1891. A must-see for every tutu-loving traveller. What did I get up to?
I got to indulge in one of my very favourite things ā a grand performance at the OpĆ©ra Garnier (itās stunning, by the way!)! Imagine ornate detailing, chandeliers glittering and the soft sound of the orchestra starting, oh, and just wait for the sheer excitement as the dancers come onstage! Thereās no other feeling in the world, lovelies! Honestly, it was just a beautiful celebration of ballet, and what is ballet without tutus? Nothing!
But it wasnāt just about ballet! You see, my loves, being a bit of a fashionista as well as a ballerina, my journey wasnāt complete without a trip to a grand Parisian couture house. It was so exciting to see silks and velvets of the finest quality in all sorts of colours ā some colours we just donāt have nowadays, but just imagine them, swirling on stage with every twirl of a ballerinaās graceful foot. Honestly, I can't get enough!
I love those trips down memory lane, my dears, where every detail becomes a story and I get to feel the excitement of the past firsthand.
That's it for today, my lovely #PinkTutu readers, but tune in next Tuesday, same time, same place for another installment of Ballet Tutu History! Until then, be sure to head to www.Pink-Tutu.com, for lots of information about how to get yourself a new ballet inspired look, whether for a casual day or for that important performance! And, of course, please do tell me what your favourite time in ballet history is! What era of tutus should I travel to next? Just let me know in the comments, below.
Until next time, my lovelies, keep twirling! š
