#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 5th May 1908
Hello my darlings! Welcome back to another exciting episode of #TutuTuesday, where we take a twirl through the enchanting world of the tutu! This week, we're whisking you back to 5th May 1908, a date brimming with balletic beauty and delightful Parisian charm. Buckle up, because this journey is going to be simply divine!
Post Number 3984 on my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com, is here to paint a picture of tutus in the time of dainty frocks, glorious gowns, and an air of elegance so effortlessly chic it would make even the most jaded fashionista sigh with admiration.
My travels this week took me to the heart of ballet โ the Grand Opera House in Paris. Just imagine, a city sparkling with Parisian lights and the aroma of freshly baked croissants filling the air! But more importantly, there was a breathtaking ballet performance just waiting for me! The Paris Opera Ballet was in full swing, captivating audiences with its impeccable choreography and artistic flair. Now, you may wonder what caught my eye in the sea of exquisite tutus on stage.
Let's rewind a little to see what made 5th May 1908 so special. On this day, Vaslav Nijinsky, a dancer whose talent and charisma were quite literally off the charts, graced the Parisian stage in a performance of Le Pavillon d'Armide.
Now, you see, my darlings, Vaslav was the absolute pinnacle of masculine grace and athleticism in the ballet world. Think sculpted features, elegant movements, and a powerful stage presence that simply mesmerized everyone. Naturally, I had to see him for myself, so I secured a prime seat in the grand hall and prepared for the magic to unfold.
And wouldn't you know it, the magic unfolded before my eyes! It wasn't just Vaslav's divine artistry; the costume for his character in Le Pavillon d'Armide was nothing short of spectacular! Imagine a simple, yet exquisitely tailored white tunic, held in place with a belt around his waist, almost like a loose and airy variation on a leotard. But it was this beautiful layered, draped skirt, this sheer and wispy fabric flowing in the slightest movement, that truly took my breath away.
My darling, the way this flowing, almost gossamer-like skirt, added movement to his dance, a flurry of beautiful silk in motion. It was truly mesmerizing! And that, my lovelies, was the start of the tutu's evolution as we know it today.
Now, before I lose myself in this fantastical story, I must return to my 1908 voyage! As the curtain closed, the audience rose in thunderous applause for the entire cast, a shower of appreciation for a performance of such brilliance. Vaslav's dancing, that incredible costume, it left everyone feeling uplifted and exhilarated!
But here's the truly fascinating part. Remember those exquisitely crafted, often ornate tutus, the ones that dominated the stage and made for the grandest and most extravagant ballets? They weren't a common sight in 1908! It wasn't until later in the century that we would see the full-bodied, multiple layered tulle skirts we associate with ballet today.
Oh my goodness, but isn't it absolutely fascinating? How the fashion world has changed, from these flowing draped skirts, to the voluminous, majestic tutus that adorn the ballerinas of today! What an enchanting journey through time!
Now, to keep our spirits high and our fashion inspiration flowing, let's have a delightful tea break, shall we? It's just what a ballerina needs to recharge those creative batteries!
