#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time - Ballet Tutus in 1908!

Hello my lovelies!

Welcome back to another dazzling #TutuTuesday, post number 3985 here on www.pink-tutu.com. I'm your time-traveling, tutu-obsessed blogger, Emma, back from a little trip to…well, you won’t believe where this time. Buckle up, buttercup! We're taking a whirlwind tour back to May 12th, 1908!

I’m just back from a lovely trip to Vienna. It's the city of music, waltzes, and...well, gorgeous ballet. Vienna is always a dream for a tutu-lover like me. And you'll be thrilled to hear the ballet scene there was just bursting with fabulous fashion.

Imagine this: ladies with swirling, flowing skirts, elaborate hair styles (the Victorians were all about the hair!), and divine bonnets topped with feathers or silk flowers! So chic!

Now, the big question: What about the tutus?

Back in 1908, the ballet world was going through a pretty significant shift. We’re starting to see the beginning of what we recognise today as a modern ballet tutu. It’s not your typical paillette-dusted, cloud-like fluff yet - it's still quite long!

Imagine the classical pointe shoe, with a very narrow waist and several layers of soft tulle that were usually layered with a silky satin underskirt. It looks quite dramatic! You'd almost call it “gown-like,” don't you think?

Remember the Romantic ballet of the late 1800s? All about light and airy, almost mystical, dancing? That is what we still see at this time, and what is influencing the style of tutus being designed. We have a very long, soft look, with the layers flowing to create a beautifully ethereal silhouette.

On This Very Day!

So, May 12th, 1908? The Vienna State Opera House would have been bustling. The Viennese waltz was in full swing, and there was the usual beautiful line up of shows that included operas and ballet performances, so you just know I had to grab some front-row seats for one of those grand operas and enjoy the scene, taking in all the glorious detail.

Now, I may have been tempted to sneak in a visit to the grandest shopping mall for some fabulous fashion – it is so important for a stylish blogger to be at the front of the fashion game! (You can find me shopping up a storm, usually on my train journeys in between my gigs.) Imagine a shop that offers hand-beaded dresses, perfect velvet for a theatre show, the most decadent shoes...and I found my hands slipping back into a few of those gorgeous tulle materials, imagining just what the new designs would be!

There was a strong Victorian look with a touch of bohemian flair about this time, which was fascinating. Think of the Victorian elegance mixed with free flowing and layered clothing…now imagine the perfect ballerina costume.

I was even dreaming up the perfect pink tutu to go with some of these outfits - the perfect shades of dusty pink for that extra bit of je ne sais quoi.

Now, even though it wasn’t all about showstopping pink tutus back then - my little heart still twirled in excitement! It was like a beautiful chapter in the ballet world that led up to what we enjoy now! Imagine a history of style. This era is still making the modern ballet tutus look so captivating. And if you’re like me, you just love the historical element!

Travel Time!

But the train was calling, so I’m off again – who knows what exciting fashion adventures are around the corner? It's this love for the ballet that brings me to all these incredible places, and that fuels my tutu-obsessed heart. And if I can show you a few little glimpses along the way...well, that's simply wonderful!

See you next Tuesday, for another delightful, fashionably fuelled #TutuTuesday journey!

And remember...wear pink!
