#TutuTuesday: A Twirl Through Time - December 15th, 1931
Hello my darlings! It's your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, Emma, here with another exciting installment of my Ballet Tutu History blog! Today's journey takes us back to December 15th, 1931, and trust me, you won't want to miss this one. Buckle up, darlings, it's time for a whirlwind tour of the fabulous world of dance and fashion!
This week I found myself whisked away to Paris, the beating heart of style and artistry. Now, while the iconic pink tutu wouldn't truly bloom until a little later, believe me, 1931 was buzzing with exciting developments in the world of ballet fashion. Think flowing, graceful skirts with a touch of whimsy and a whole lot of elegance!
What was happening on December 15th, 1931, you ask? Well, the Parisian dance scene was ablaze! The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, a company with roots in Imperial Russia but now enjoying enormous success in the West, was lighting up the stage. Just imagine! Imagine witnessing a performance of "The Nutcracker", for instance, with its beautiful, elaborate costumes and the magic of Tchaikovsky’s score. My, oh my, it would have been quite the spectacle!
The Parisian theatre scene in general was quite the fashionable affair. Imagine glamorous gowns with flowing skirts, headbands, and a hint of lace, all adorned with jewels and pearls. So elegant! My dear reader, this was truly an era of artistic innovation and fashion exploration where the art of the tutu was beginning to take its first, truly captivating steps.
Speaking of steps, my journey to this date was simply splendid. It was the perfect chance to travel by train! I hopped on board the glorious Orient Express, a journey of elegant carriages, a sense of intrigue and adventure, all leading me right to the heart of this stylish era. You'd be amazed how quickly a lovely silk gown and a feather boa make you feel like you've stepped right into the heart of the 1930s!
I can't help but think, how amazing would it be to see a show with a touch of the 1930s ballet spirit today? It’s such a beautiful vision. I dream of elegant flowing tutus with graceful, elongated lines. A little touch of silk, a hint of glitter, and maybe some gorgeous headpieces! And perhaps, just perhaps, a single, delicately placed pink feather - a precursor to my much-loved pink tutus!
I hope I’ve sparked your imagination, my lovely reader. Now it’s your turn. Go on, indulge in a little creative dreaming about what tutus might have been like in those glorious times. Do some online research or visit a museum exhibition on this era. Explore the world of fashion and dance, the way you can create your own personal dance history!
I can’t wait to be back with you next Tuesday, where I'll whisk you off to yet another captivating moment in our glorious Ballet Tutu History journey. Until then, let the music play! Keep twirling, my darlings, and don’t forget: Every day is a good day for a pink tutu!
With Love,
Emma
