#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past! (Post 5247)

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu! I’m Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast and chronicler of all things frilly and fabulous. This week, we’re stepping back in time, dear readers, to July 19th, 1932! Isn’t it exciting?

I absolutely love exploring the history of the tutu, finding out how it’s evolved over the years, and dreaming of all the exciting performances and costumes that have graced the stage. Today, I’ve set my time machine to New York City - the heart of the ballet world back in 1932!

New York is a whirlwind of energy! I’m dashing about, soaking up the sights and sounds, especially those from the stage! Oh my, the theatre district is positively dazzling with its beautiful shows and beautiful people! There’s so much happening – let’s dive in, shall we?

A Glittering Glamour of Ballet in 1932

Back in 1932, the ballet scene in New York City was simply breathtaking. It was all about opulent gowns, elegant movements, and that beautiful, delicate ballerina grace. Now, I have to admit, I wouldn’t exactly call those 1932 tutus "pink," not in the glorious shades of blush and candy floss we adore today. They were more along the lines of classic white or pale, pale peach. Shhh... don’t tell my designer friend about that!

Speaking of designers, the darling Coco Chanel was already making her mark, darling. Those amazing suits she creates – oh my! We can certainly thank her for those streamlined shapes and feminine lines that inspired many designers to experiment with how ballet costumes would evolve over time. You can imagine how she influenced the dance world – a real game changer.

But darling, don’t think that ballet in 1932 was just about these lovely, classic shapes. Remember the glamorous ballets, like the Apollo which had everyone talking! Stravinsky, darling! The composer, the choreography – the entire performance was a spectacle! So dramatic and dynamic, it left me completely spellbound. And with these new shapes and dances, they just needed the perfect tutu – sleek and dramatic to complement those dynamic movements!

Tutu Transformation - A Dash of Drama!

You can certainly see the evolution in tutus from this time onward. From those perfectly structured designs to the beautiful, romantic looks that took inspiration from the beauty of the dance itself. You know how much I love to imagine what they’ll look like in the future!

But 1932! A whole world of wonder, where the tutu, although perhaps a bit more modest, was taking centre stage in the dance world. And just as ballet evolves with every performance, so does our beloved tutu!

Oh, That's A Wonderful Dress!

Before I move onto our daily dose of tutus, my darling readers, let me tell you about this divine dress I saw! It’s simply enchanting. The colour – a divine shade of lavender that's making my heart flutter! It has just the most gorgeous beading, darling – it glittered as I passed, catching the light just so. My designer friend would die to see it – maybe I’ll send her a sketch after we arrive home. I imagine the lavender will inspire my tutu design next month, darling. I think lavender will look amazing on the stage under the stage lights!

Speaking of stage lights, this evening, I am absolutely delighted to see a show at the Metropolitan Opera House! Oh darling, I am just drowning in the excitement of it all! So many amazing dancers in exquisite costumes, performing beautifully. What a day for a tutu, darling!

Finding Your Own Dance of Happiness

Every week I make it my mission to inspire each and every one of you to embrace the magic of the tutu. Don’t be shy! Put one on, twirl around, and let your inner ballerina shine! If a girl from Derbyshire can be a time-travelling ballerina, darling, anything is possible. Just remember to twirl with confidence, spread joy wherever you go, and always be a shining example of graceful elegance.

So my lovelies, until next #TutuTuesday, keep twirling, keep dreaming, and never stop believing in the magic of the tutu! Remember, darling, the power to make every day feel special lies within us all, like a ballet waiting to unfold!

With love and tutus,

Emma.
