#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post #5351

Greetings my darling Tutu Lovers!

Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed time traveler, back from another whirlwind adventure through the annals of fashion history. This week, my trusty time machine has whisked me to July 17th, 1934, and let me tell you, darling, the ballet scene is just thriving. We're smack-dab in the midst of a Golden Age for ballet, with new ballets popping up faster than you can say 'grand jeté', and every fashionable lady and gentleman eager to catch a performance.

And where am I, you ask? Why, none other than the heart of it all - Paris, darling! The City of Lights is just radiating with style and elegance. As I sashay down the Champs-Élysées, I practically have to fight off admirers - it seems the Parisian fashionistas adore my pink tulle creation (a true vintage number from the early 20th century - don't tell anyone it came from the dusty back of my time-traveling wardrobe!). It's a complete symphony of frothy loveliness - a delightful throwback to the early tutus!

So, what's a girl to do in this haven of culture and chic? See a ballet show, darling! Luckily, it's a thriving scene. Tonight I'm catching the iconic Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, a ballet company famous for its opulent costumes and stunning choreography. I imagine the ballet will be bursting with flamboyant colour, as this is the time period where every detail mattered – think delicate, beaded slippers, silk tutus that billow like clouds, and the most stunning feather boas imaginable. I am in absolute heaven!

Speaking of tutus, darling, let's delve into some #TutuTuesday history. This era was, shall we say, a turning point for ballet tutus. Imagine a scene: The "pauvre" ballet dress! Tiny, form-fitting tunics and very minimal embellishments! You're probably picturing the exact opposite of a magnificent tutu, right?

Well, picture this – those small dresses are evolving! We're getting closer and closer to that big, fluffy silhouette that we all know and love - we're even beginning to see glimpses of layered, voluminous tulle and hints of that quintessential tutu form.

Now, darling, don't let these tiny tunics fool you! The ballet world was exploding with talent and creativity. Sergei Diaghilev - oh my goodness, the man was a fashion genius - spearheaded the Ballet Russe and practically reinvented the whole shebang!

Imagine, darling:

A world without The Sleeping Beauty! It would be a complete fashion travesty, don't you think?*

Sergei, with his grand visions for every ballet, commissioned a whole host of avant-garde designers - people like Léon Bakst and Coco Chanel! That's Chanel! My darling, this is ballet fashion history! The ballet was becoming an explosion of exquisite fashion that would influence fashion in so many exciting directions.

And speaking of excitement, darling, I absolutely must visit some of the charming shops in the City of Lights - Paris, don't you know, was bursting with vibrant fashion houses. Can you imagine what they're showcasing for the ballet dancers and their audiences? Silk and satin, lace and ribbons! I can't resist going on a little shopping spree myself - this is where it all began darling, with elegant gowns and exquisite silk costumes that simply took my breath away.

The ballet, darling - it wasn't just a performance. It was a symphony of fashion, art and passion!

Imagine if everyone loved fashion this much? Can you imagine? A world where everyone went to the ballet, watched their favourite dancers strut in the latest creations...and felt their hearts flutter for both art and fashion... It's something special.

Now, darling, I must rush. My time-traveling tutu needs a thorough cleaning after this Parisian whirlwind. Until next time, don't forget to live a little fashionably!

Stay chic,

Emma, your friendly tutu-loving time traveller.
