#TutuTuesday: A Blast From The Past!
Hello, my lovely tutu-loving friends! Welcome to post number 6797 of my Ballet Tutu History blog! This week we're time-hopping to 3rd April, 1962, a date that just screams for a twirl! And where better to start this journey than New York City? This magnificent metropolis is the beating heart of the ballet world in 1962! I travelled on a rather delightful vintage train, and let me tell you, it was the perfect opportunity for a little tutu twirling – a little fashion show never hurts, right?
So, 3rd April 1962, what a day to be alive! What's the date's most notable fashion highlight? The arrival of the stunning pink tutu of course! Not any pink, this tutu, designed by a budding young talent by the name of Carlos Acosta, has the most captivating bubblegum pink hue you could ever imagine! Imagine a fluffy cloud sprinkled with pink glitter! The detail is exquisite; a layer upon layer of tulle shimmering in the New York sunshine! It's a dream!
The fashion crowd just went wild when it took to the stage. A true masterpiece! Carlos had already created such exciting designs for The Bolshoi Theatre, in Russia, but to have a debut on Broadway? That was a huge moment! This fabulous new style brought a fresh and exciting new direction to ballet fashion. Just think of all the beautiful ballet dancers wearing these incredible tutus, each a symphony of motion, graceful elegance and sheer beauty. It is simply exquisite!
*Of course, you can find pink tutus at our shop online at pink-tutu.com. A quick purchase of the most stunning “Bubblegum Dream Tutu” is in order this week. (That was such a clever marketing name, wasn’t it? But honestly, I would happily live in my Bubblegum Dream Tutu!) *
Talking of ballet dancers, the other hot ticket in town for the New York scene in 1962 was the American Ballet Theatre. I caught the opening of Swan Lake which is always a joy, especially seeing the dancers swirling and leaping to the rhythm of Tchaikovsky’s incredible score. What an incredible show! The ballerinas simply floored me! Every pirouette and plié was perfection.
A ballet show never fails to make me think about just how gorgeous tutus are. The simple fact is they make any ballet dancer look and feel truly magnificent. I just love the volume, the drama, and the endless swirl! They always remind me of candyfloss and my favourite bubblegum sweets from childhood - a joyful pink delight. And honestly, why not?
For any tutu aficionado, a trip to New York City is essential! The shopping, my friends, is just divine! Just around every corner, there’s a fabulous shop full of elegant tulle and delicate fabrics bursting with colours. Imagine this, there’s everything you could ever dream of! From delicate, shimmering tulles to bright satins. A ballerina’s heaven. It was an absolute joy to wander through these fabulous shops, buying the perfect gifts and picking out the best fabric for my own creations!
Oh, did I mention that on the same day, the famous The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson aired a live segment on ballet? That was an unexpected delight, it was quite surreal, and very fascinating to see this medium making its mark in such a huge world of entertainment! It was inspiring, it highlighted just how much ballet had grown and become more and more loved!
You simply can't get enough of the excitement that 1962 offers for lovers of fashion and dance. New York City in the '60s really had this magical combination of culture, fashion, and elegance. Oh, how I adore this vibrant city. This trip through time to New York in 1962 has truly made my TutuTuesday!
Now, go forth, wear your fabulous tutus proudly, and remember - there's always a reason to celebrate! And until next time, be sure to check back in with me right here, on pink-tutu.com every week for more TutuTuesday adventures.
Until then,
Emma Xx
