#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 19th March 1963!
Hello, my darling tutu lovers! It's Emma, your favourite pink-clad time-travelling ballerina, back with another dazzling dive into the fascinating history of ballet tutus! Today, we're hopping aboard the time machine and landing in the magical year of 1963, a truly glorious era for the art of ballet.
Paris, the City of Lights and Tutus!
This week, we find ourselves in the heart of Parisian elegance. Oh, Paris, how I adore thee! The scent of freshly baked pastries, the charming cobblestone streets, the glittering lights of the Opera Garnier, and of course, the oh-so-chic ballet tutus!
But before we delve into the exquisite details, let me share a little secret. Today, I am absolutely overflowing with excitement! You see, darling readers, today marks a significant day for ballet history. Imagine this: The Paris Opera Ballet unveiled a brand new production of "La Bayadère," with an iconic tutu designed by none other than the legendary Christian Dior!
Can you picture it, my lovelies? A gorgeous, whimsical creation, probably a beautiful shade of pink, perhaps adorned with sparkling sequins or soft, fluffy feathers - just what we, true tutu lovers, would dream of. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall at that premiere!
Back in Time for a Glimpse at Parisian Ballet Fashion
Back to 1963 now. Picture this, darlings, the year the world was enthralled with the music of the Beatles. Oh, and can we please take a moment to adore how many pink outfits those boys sported in their music videos? Back in England, Mod fashion was hitting its peak, with skirts shorter than ever before, and the iconic little shift dress becoming a staple in every fashionista's wardrobe.
Let’s talk Tutus!
Oh, but back to our dear ballerinas, how splendid they look in their costumes. Tutus of the early sixties were much like the graceful silhouettes we're accustomed to, though with a certain refined elegance.
Let's have a peek behind the curtain at what the stars of Paris were wearing that day. Think sleek, flowing lines with a touch of drama. The "La Bayadère" production probably had exquisite tutus that showcased the power of dance, using layers of shimmering tulle to create the iconic look we adore. It might even have featured a more romantic style, like a shorter tulle skirt paired with a beautiful, embroidered bodice, showing off some of that graceful, toned ballerina figure!
Taking Tutu Inspiration from Parisian Elegance
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Imagine this, lovelies! Dior's "La Bayadère" tutus have surely inspired other designs throughout the sixties. They would have paved the way for other exciting creations in other productions across the world, giving us a delightful selection of stunning ballet costumes.
Traveling in Style
Speaking of Parisian glamour, oh how I simply adore catching the train from Derbyshire, across to the enchanting streets of London and then hop on the Eurostar for my exciting, time-travelling adventures! The train carriages offer the perfect space to enjoy the view while writing a blog entry, but there’s nothing like gazing out of the window as we hurtle towards Paris or New York, seeing those landscapes go by – all while planning my next fashion excursion and tutu collection.
Fashion and Shopping, Darling!
I’m so excited to think how fashion changed after Dior's creation! Every single one of us probably wanted a tutu similar to that "La Bayadère" one. It’s true, we ladies all have the power of our purses, and I imagine fashion houses all around Paris were overflowing with customers looking to make their very own tutu dreams a reality!
But you know me, darling. I always keep my eyes peeled for the newest tutu trends. From shopping for new, luxurious creations to uncovering the best hidden vintage gems at local markets - nothing is more satisfying than adding a new, delightful tutu to my ever-expanding wardrobe!
Sharing the Tutu Love!
So darling readers, there you have it! A peek behind the ballet curtain, showing you a magical time in Paris, during the sixties. We're constantly inspired by those ballerinas who sashay across the stage with such beauty and grace, don't you think? We must make them proud by sharing our love for all things tutus and showing everyone that we are strong, graceful and fierce - just like those Parisian ballet stars. Don't forget to keep spreading the joy and remember… we all look stunning in pink tutus, wouldn't you agree?
Stay tuned for next week's post for more magical moments of tutu history.
Until then, darlings, dance like nobody's watching… in a pink tutu of course!
Love and twirls,
Emma
