Tutu Tuesday: 6862 - A 1963 Summer Soirée 🩰
Hello my lovely tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood time-travelling ballerina blogger, and today's #TutuTuesday takes us right back to the dazzling, swirling summer of 1963. It's a scorcher here in the heart of New York, but let's be honest, a bit of heat just makes the sparkle of a well-chosen tutu even more dazzling! ✨
This week, I've journeyed back to a time where ballet wasn't just enjoyed by a select few; it was a national obsession! The air was electric with the buzz of upcoming performances, everyone from the Queen to your next-door neighbour was captivated by the grace and elegance of ballerinas.
Oh, and speaking of royalty, on this very day in 1963, Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh paid a visit to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden! Imagine the excitement, the hushed whispers, the awestruck faces of the audience. There's nothing quite like watching the best ballet in the world performed in a royal setting. I must have popped on a fetching floral print, cinched in with a belt at the waist - perfect for an occasion like this. 👗
Of course, the 1960s are known for their vibrant fashion trends. But guess what? It’s the 1960s, and tutu is having a big moment. The most exciting thing I spotted on the streets of New York this week? The iconic '60s “baby doll dress”. We're talking delicate lace, pastel colours, and the perfect silhouette for showing off the graceful silhouette of a tutu-wearing ballerina. Imagine how those frocks would pair with a wispy, tulle-edged tutu for a playful, chic evening out!
Speaking of chic evenings out, my week in New York has been full of delightful ballet excursions. I finally managed to score tickets to the New York City Ballet's performance of "Swan Lake" at the Lincoln Center! Just imagining those graceful ballerinas in their beautifully feathered swan tutus - a real visual feast. And I had the perfect attire to match - a deep crimson, single-layered tutu with shimmering sequins - you know I couldn't resist a little bling for a special evening out!
While we’re talking about New York City Ballet, let’s remember the fabulous Mr. Balanchine! This genius choreographer really put ballet on the map in the States and made New York the city to be in for the artform. His legacy continues to inspire generations of dancers, and I for one will forever be indebted to his pioneering spirit.
Another must-do for any aspiring ballerina in 1963: a visit to the School of American Ballet. Founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein in 1934, the school boasts some of the most esteemed ballet training in the world. This is where the stars of tomorrow get their start, and seeing young ballerinas in their training tutus, fuelled by passion and dedication, really sets my own dancing heart ablaze.
There's nothing like a touch of vintage glamour to transport you to another era, and nothing does that quite like a meticulously chosen tutu. Now, I know many of you are probably thinking, "Emma, tutus aren't for everyone!" I say, "Oh, but you’re wrong!" Tutùs are like rainbows: for everyone, for every age, for every occasion! 🌈
Just like those playful ballerinas you see skipping through the streets in New York this summer, everyone deserves to experience the joy of twirling, the delight of the floaty feel, the empowerment of expressing yourself through a vibrant dance. Don't be shy, give a tutu a try! You might just be surprised by how liberating and fun it can be.
As for me, I’m already packing my time machine, preparing for next week's #TutuTuesday adventure. Who knows where we'll go, what exciting ballet tales we'll unearth?
