#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1985-04-23 - Post #8000!

Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com! It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another journey through the glorious history of ballet tutus! Today, we're twirling back to 1985, a year when the world was buzzing with colour, excitement and - of course! - tutus!

As usual, I've popped on my favourite pink tutu and hopped on a delightful steam train to whisk us back to April 23rd, 1985, a day packed with magical moments for the world of dance!

A Royal Encounter!

First on the agenda is a very special occasion: the birth of Lady Louise Windsor! The future Queen of England’s youngest daughter arrived at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey, England, bringing joy and anticipation to the Royal family. Just imagine: tiny royal feet already poised to grace the stage someday! We could already envision the first pink tutu! (And I’m always looking for royal pink tutu inspiration, don’t you know!)

This also had everyone buzzing in the UK. You see, the Queen is actually quite the fan of the ballet and, I mean, she’s the ultimate style icon! (That pink broach! That signature hat! Divine!). Even though Lady Louise will need some time to find her own unique style, this made us wonder if there will be some stunning royal tutu appearances in her future? One can dream!

A Day of Enchanting Performances!

1985 saw a whole slew of magnificent ballet performances around the globe, so you could almost say that this year is full of tutu inspiration! Mikhail Baryshnikov continued to enchant audiences with his masterful technique, and Rudolf Nureyev was making his final tours – oh how the hearts of audiences soared! Imagine the glorious tutus on display during those breathtaking performances!

Parisian Elegance

Of course, we cannot speak of ballet and tutus without a touch of Parisian chic! I took a little trip over the Channel to soak up the elegant vibe. Paris was alive with the captivating work of the Paris Opera Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre was lighting up the stage with incredible performances. Martha Graham’s visionary choreography brought a powerful artistic dynamism that captured the world’s attention, and every performance just seemed to exude a certain "je ne sais quoi" (you know, just like my tutu!)

London Glamour

Back home in London, we were treated to the glamorous creations of Frederick Ashton, one of the greatest British choreographers, who crafted stories on the stage through beautiful movements, elegant costuming - including glorious tutus, of course! And then, let's not forget the timeless beauty of Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake." Imagine the elegant tutus gracing the stages of the Royal Opera House, captivating everyone who dared to look. I swear I can hear the ethereal strains of the music even now!

A Journey through Style and Elegance

I took this opportunity to explore a few beautiful London shops filled with charming creations – and there was a tutu for every style, from whimsical tulle creations to more classic designs with beautiful embroidered details. I may have succumbed to temptation (I always succumb to a bit of tutus!) and bought a stunning vintage black tutu - perfect for the city, with a touch of timeless glamour.

But the most wonderful thing about the tutus from 1985 is how each design embodies its own unique era and character. You could see the creative energy pouring from every detail, from the hand-crafted beading to the carefully-selected fabric.

Sharing the Love

There is simply no denying it – there is something truly magical about a tutu. It embodies artistry, grace and endless possibility! That’s why, every week, I bring you a new tutu Tuesday post filled with amazing tutus!

It's the reason why I continue my passion to make tutus part of every outfit – whether we're heading to the theatre, out for tea, or simply taking a stroll through our beautiful English countryside! Let’s create a world filled with pink tutus, shall we?! (It would be truly spectacular, and so stylish!)

So, here’s to all the tutu lovers!

Until next week,

Your devoted Tutu Fairy, Emma

xx
