#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - A Whirl Through Time!

Post 9528

Hello darlings! Welcome back to another fabulous edition of #TutuTuesday, where we twirl through the fascinating history of the ballet tutu! Today, we're going back to a balletic birthday, a big day for my favourite form of dance – 5th August 2014!

Now, my travel journal tells me it's been quite the day for ballet, folks! It’s been one of those wonderful days that combines history with exciting contemporary creations. I've been whizzing around, from the magnificent Parisian OpĂ©ra Garnier to the vibrant, bustling theatres of New York! Oh, the places a pink tutu can take you!

First stop – Paris! The iconic Garnier Opera House has been bustling, and it’s a real celebration! See, dear readers, today is the birthday of one of the world's most beloved ballerinas - Anna Pavlova! This legendary Russian ballerina was born on this very day, in 1881.

Now, you all know Anna Pavlova, right? Even if you don’t know her name, you’ve definitely seen her incredible moves. Pavlova was famous for her revolutionary lightness and her exquisite grace. It’s almost impossible to look at a ballerina perform "The Dying Swan" and not be moved. Such stunning artistry and emotion.

She is a truly iconic figure in ballet, and to think – on this very day in history, the world welcomed her into existence!

Of course, we couldn't resist popping in for a spot of tutu shopping after seeing her performances at the OpĂ©ra Garnier. I’m not one to say no to a little bit of retail therapy after a fabulous ballet performance, am I?

And my darling readers, the Parisian shops were just bursting with tutus today! A magnificent whirlwind of silk and tulle, delicate lace and shimmering beads! Just dreamy!

My Parisian adventures weren't over yet, and as my trusty travel guide recommended, I took a trip to the MusĂ©e des Arts DĂ©coratifs. Here, they have the most stunning collection of ballet costumes, oh my word, it's simply incredible! The craftsmanship and artistry were utterly breathtaking, so many magnificent examples of “classical” and "romantic” tutus, you could just spend hours getting lost in those designs!

Talking of tutus
it just wouldn’t be a #TutuTuesday without discussing the fabulous fashion in our favorite ballerina's era! Today, it’s all about those iconic long tutus, all those dreamy layers and elegant designs. If you ever need a day for some real “classic tutu” inspiration, you just have to head over to Paris!

Now, if Paris has been a journey through the beautiful classical era, then New York City has been a whirlwind of modern trends! New York just buzzes with a different energy and vibe!

First up, the Broadway show scene was just magical, full of sparkling lights, bustling crowds, and dazzling performances. So many brilliant creative choreographers are out there creating exciting, bold, new styles, breaking all the rules and creating tutus with daring new ideas – truly amazing! I even caught a sneak peak at the incredible costumes being made at one of the costume houses
So many shimmering sequins, vibrant colours and bold cuts! It’s not just tutus we are seeing on stage either, all sorts of amazing things that push the boundaries of fashion and artistry!

I took a trip over to the Metropolitan Opera too. Oh my goodness, it’s a grand, glittering palace to see all those gorgeous performers on stage and the outfits are just phenomenal, it truly sets the mood for the evening and helps us appreciate the dedication of everyone who contributes to these grand performances, from the seamstresses right through to the actors and musicians.

But back to our #TutuTuesday journey, and my dearest readers, I think I found the perfect place for this very special day!

Today is also a special day for The American Ballet Theatre. See, on this very date, back in 1939, The American Ballet Theatre was founded, so it was truly a lovely coincidence to find myself there today, taking in all that New York magic.

So you see, my darlings, I’ve truly had a phenomenal day celebrating the magic of ballet, its beautiful history, and all the inspiring performances created by some incredibly talented and dedicated dancers around the world! I'm incredibly proud to be a part of the vibrant and amazing ballet community, sharing a little bit of its wonder with you each week.

If you want to relive the magic with me, I highly recommend checking out Anna Pavlova’s performance of “The Dying Swan” on Youtube. I even discovered a documentary all about her too – it truly is the most inspiring story.

Don’t forget to check back next week for another dazzling installment of #TutuTuesday , full of amazing history, stunning tutus and magical stories!

Until then, remember – the best moments are always full of a little sparkle!

Until next week my lovely dancers, and don’t forget to wear pink, I’ve just received a fabulous new consignment of tutus from my favorite supplier in Derby, and I will be sharing some sneak peeks and styling ideas with you on the Pink Tutu website in the next few days – see you there!

Love, Emma x
