#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 9715

Hello darlings! Welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History post! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, straight from the year 2018 – or as we like to say here, the year of the “twirly twenty-eighties!”

Oh my, where do I even begin this week? I just arrived back from the most delightful trip to the Paris Opera, wouldn’t you know it, they were showcasing “The Nutcracker”! The scenery was spectacular, like stepping into a magical fairytale world, and the dancers, they were exquisite. Everything was so grand and luxurious, and let’s not forget the costumes!

Speaking of costumes, and you know I’m obsessed, it’s time to jump right into today’s topic – the evolution of the tutu. Can you imagine ballet without the tutu? It’s just not the same!

So, where do we begin? Well, you’ve got to understand, in the beginning, back in the good ol' days, ballerinas were all about practicality. Imagine a massive, full-length dress made of layers upon layers of fabric, a whole ballgown on stage! Can you picture them attempting a tour with all that fabric getting in the way? Shudders.

It was all thanks to the visionary, Marie Taglioni, in the 19th century, who had a real flair for fashion, she’s quite literally the “godmother” of the tutu! She debuted this revolutionary short skirt – it’s still known today as the “Romantic Tutu”, with it’s flowing, almost gossamer layers – how beautifully elegant and airy!

Fast forward to the late 19th century, a French dancer called Carlotta Grisi - the most sensational name for a ballet dancer - decided to trim things even further. Imagine her daring move - a tutu shortened to her waist, and there you have it – the classic tutu – a dancer’s dream! The waistline made the body line just divine, very striking, and just like that the ballerina took centre stage and the tutu just flowed around her effortlessly! This little change was huge in the ballet world, not just because of its beauty, but because of how powerful it made dancers look, just like strong and majestic creatures dancing freely!

Then came the tutu-tastic twentieth century, and those artistic folks took the tutu on a whirl-wind tour of new interpretations. They took their cues from the times and brought their own fabulous and dramatic touches, with new styles, fabrics, and a new flair, adding that touch of pizzazz, giving each tutu a totally unique look! And that brings us up to this amazing time.

Speaking of 2018, what's everyone talking about? The internet! It’s exploded with all the tutu trends. Social media’s making waves - ballet and its grace is getting so much love and appreciation – it’s almost as if everyone’s been transported to the magic of the stage! My favourite online haunt right now is Pinterest, darling, so much inspiration! Instagram is wonderful too - it's a great way to stay in touch and share your Tutu Tuesdays with the whole wide world!

But you know, for all its glamor, let’s not forget that the tutu is a testament to the beauty and strength of a ballerina. Just look at the incredible discipline it takes to move gracefully in that skirt, a tutu is more than just a dress, it's a powerful symbol, representing grace and determination - just the thing to encourage everyone to twirl!

Now for a little shopping news, I’ve been adding to my tutu collection – a bit of an obsession, you know! Found some darling pieces – one pink tutu-de-la-robe, absolutely delightful. If you’re planning a tutu-inspired shopping spree, the best stores for a fabulous find – check out Harrods, the Ballet Boutique and Topshop for the newest fashions – they are just perfect to complement a tutu - with shoes, scarves, anything to bring the colour of the ballerina into your everyday style!

Speaking of fashion and inspiration, I think I have to confess… the Parisian streets really inspired me! Their sense of style is exquisite - every person with such confidence. Their flair is the ultimate in "how to wear the tutu", effortlessly bringing an elegant edge, a Parisian flair, into the street-wear style of the day! They just own the way they dress. My goal? Everyone twirling around town, it’s totally possible to wear tutus in everyday life. Go on! I dare you! Be bold, embrace your inner ballerina, and make a statement with a tutu in any setting - don’t be afraid to experiment with colours, fabrics and shapes, go for the “wow”! Let’s keep inspiring, creating, and dreaming big – that’s what ballet and life are all about!
