#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through Time ā Ballet Tutu History (Post #9727)
Hello darlings! Itās Emma, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another edition of your favourite weekly dose of tutu history! Today, as weāre taking a trip to May 29th, 2018, prepare yourselves for a whirl through time, because weāre heading to the land of glittering tutus, elegant pirouettes, andā¦ oh, yes! Itās a Wednesday, and Iām here! Howās that for time-travel fun?
Remember that time travel is all thanks to my fabulously talented, tutu-twirling performances ā they really do pay for the travel costs! I managed to secure a gig in Londonās Royal Opera House yesterday, a performance that had everyone asking for a standing ovationā¦ in pink tutus, of course. Can you believe it?
Anyways, letās get back to the actual date weāre investigating! I am very much looking forward to this time! I love how it blends fashion, culture, andā¦ oh, how could I forgetā¦ ballet!
Back in 2018:
Remember that beautiful summer weather back in 2018? It feels like a dream! Honestly, itās why Iām feeling so good about this visitā¦ I think the gorgeous weather and the delightful London vibes might just encourage a bit of shopping. After all, a tutu-loving time traveler always needs to stock up on sparkly new wardrobe items!
Speaking of shopping:
Remember that delightful place called Anthropologie? This is the year they launched their own ballet flats! Perfect for twirling down cobbled streets or a quick run for a cupcake (thatās my personal favorite, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, and Iām always in need of some sugar). Oh, they even came with gorgeous patterns! This year seems like the ultimate place to be for fashion-forward ballet lovers, right?
Andā¦ if youāre a fashionista, let me tell you, everyone was talking about the new Alexander McQueen Fall collection that came out in May. Imagine ā exquisite black velvet, the softest of satins, a bit of punk attitude mixed with exquisite grace. So, if you were lucky enough to be around in May of 2018, be sure to take a peek at this collection. It is fashion heaven for every stylish ballet lover!
So, what were people actually wearing in 2018?
The fashion world was pretty obsessed with the return of the āvintageā look, think: soft florals, loose silhouettes, and yesā¦ a lot of lace! You know me ā I adore lace ā itās delicate and romantic, so naturally I am loving the revival! I can already picture itā¦ gorgeous vintage tutus with delicate floral detailsā¦ Iām thinking pale pink or even soft blush tonesā¦ (If you haven't already, I do encourage everyone to try some pink in their wardrobes. You'll see it suits just about everyone!).
But enough about what I think they were wearing, letās talk about actual ballerinas, shall we? I have to tell youā¦ this date is pretty special for dance lovers!
This is the time of year when The Royal Ballet in London performed "La Bayadere" ā it was an absolute stunner of a show. I love this show ā I had a blast twirling along! Imagine a blend of Indian traditions, stunning classical techniques, and oh myā¦ those vibrant colours ā absolutely divine!
Remember the history?
Remember that āLa Bayadereā wasnāt actually created in the late 19th century ā it is, in fact, a āballet-melangeā as they called it at the time ā a combination of different historical and geographical aspects. That is a real testament to the rich history of ballet and the way it blends cultures ā it is always a thrill to me when I get to see these ballets on stage. They offer an incredible glimpse into the world that was ā it's truly a reminder that dance has always been a language everyone can understand!
Speaking of language, did you know that "tutu" has been around for ages? It actually goes back to 1830 when āLa Sylphideā premiered in Paris. That is how the term for those delicate, airy, fabulous dance garments became so widely recognized and loved. I love how, even as time goes on, thereās a new way to be modern yet still respect those traditional ways! And itās even more magical that itās been carried by such important figures as Marie Taglioni! Do you know who she is, dearies? You know itās important to learn about history!
What makes this time so special?
I truly believe that, for all the reasons I have mentioned, 2018 marks a special period in the history of ballet. The way that fashion was celebrating a love of vintage styles and a general desire for elegance and style mixed with some classic tutus and modern day twists and performances is really something to be seen and appreciated.
I had a chance to visit the London Ballet Studios in Covent Garden today. Can you believe how exciting that was? It was such a whirlwind day and seeing all those graceful dancers, so concentrated, so elegantā¦ I was in awe, dearies. Honestly, all the dedication these young people show ā it inspires me, motivates me.
You see, sometimes, even the most confident of time-traveling ballet bloggers needs a bit of inspiration! It is always such a joy to go back and learn more about ballet! Honestly, you guys just cannot know how inspiring those incredible dance studios are! I can't wait to get home and wear my new pink tutu from a lovely boutique on Bond Street and work on my own routine in the gardenā¦ and I promise, dearies, that when you all catch me for my next #TutuTuesday post, weāll be getting to some truly inspiring things, I know it!
A Final Word:
Remember ā I want everyone wearing tutus, and this is the way I will be doing my part!
Catch me next week ā the adventures of the pink tutu time traveller never cease!
XOXO
Emma
