Hello my dearest Tutu-Lovers! It’s Emma, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, back again for another #TutuTuesday adventure! This week we're taking a little trip through time to the exciting, glittering year of 2031.
Ooh, it’s so chic! Everything is just so much more here, and believe me, that includes the tutus. From the sleek and futuristic lines of the contemporary dancers, to the extravagant swirls of the traditional ballet performances, it’s all about movement and expressing oneself with confidence.
Speaking of expressing oneself, did you know this 18th of March is National Tutu Day? Yep, that’s right – a whole day dedicated to those gorgeous frilly marvels! Apparently, the 2030s saw a resurgence of appreciation for ballet, especially the iconic tutu. And you can bet, darling, there's a whole lot of pink involved. Think swirling, candy-floss clouds of tulle – truly a dream!
My trusty time machine brought me to the buzzing city of Tokyo, and oh my, you would not believe the fashions! Imagine a swirling rainbow of silks and shimmering textures, mixed with those sleek modern silhouettes. The street-style in this part of the world is extraordinary. The Tokyo Ballet is having its annual Spring Showcase, and it's absolutely fabulous. All sorts of amazing designs and concepts, plus a sprinkle of whimsical tulle thrown in for good measure. The tutus in the performances are like pieces of art, all meticulously crafted with dazzling detail. It’s almost as though each dancer has their own tiny fashion show, all spun together in one glorious piece.
It's amazing to see how the tutu has evolved over time. You wouldn't think a piece of clothing could hold so much history, would you? I mean, imagine all the incredible women, from the Parisian ballerinas of the Romantic era, to the trailblazers of the 20th century, who've all donned this beautiful garment, gracefully taking us through centuries of art and artistry. It truly is a time capsule of elegance and expression.
And, don't even get me started on the colours! Every hue of pink imaginable! Bubblegum pink, blush pink, cotton candy pink – you name it, they've got it. It's pure ballet heaven! Even the men in their dancewear are embracing the vibrant colour palette. There's even a troupe here, The Tokyo Tutus, made entirely of male dancers who've taken the bold decision to embrace a splash of pink in their routines. Amazing.
Now, let’s rewind back a bit to get a proper perspective on the evolution of the tutu. The "tutu" as we know it today actually wasn’t called that originally. Can you believe it? It’s all a bit too sophisticated and stylish for today, But if we take a look back, it was called the "tutu," but oh was it short – think above the knee, even higher sometimes. It was an era of audacious movement, expressing grace through bold and revolutionary lines. Then we have the iconic Romantic tutu, swirling and so dramatic. All those tiers of fabric creating these incredible illusions of weightlessness - simply exquisite!
There are more stories about the evolution of the tutu I could tell you, dear reader, but I have to be mindful of the train timetable – I need to get back to my little flat in Derbyshire. I'm always in a rush! So many fabulous events in my world of ballet! Last week, I caught a fabulous production of “Giselle” in Vienna, just darling, with the most divine set and costumes. All those ruffles! You know I'm a big fan of a good ruffle! And this coming weekend, I'm off to see “The Nutcracker” in Paris – can't wait to see the exquisite Snow Queen tutu – sparkling and ethereal, my favourite style!
But enough about me. Remember, dearest Tutu-lovers, the tutu isn’t just a garment. It’s a statement, a celebration, a burst of joyful energy, a reflection of individuality and, yes, even a symbol of pink! Let’s continue to dance with confidence, letting the tutu inspire our own journeys, both on and off the stage.
