Pink Tutu Vienna - Post 57: A Waltz through Vienna's Wonders
Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, Emma, back from Vienna, Austria, where I've been twirling, touring and soaking up the glorious, glamorous atmosphere!
This week, on my beloved Wednesday (because it's the perfect day for a spot of tutu-twirling and travel, don't you think?), I'm writing to you from my charming little hotel room overlooking the gorgeous Vienna State Opera. It’s like something straight out of a fairytale - and no, I'm not just saying that because I have a tutu on!
Before we get into the Vienna bits (ooh, I can already hear the waltz music in my head!), let's have a little chat about this week's journey. You see, darlings, travelling by train has always held a special place in my heart. The clickety-clack of the tracks, the rhythmic swaying of the carriages, it’s all just so… romantic! This time, however, I opted for a slightly less romantic mode of transport… a horse! That’s right, darling - I found myself on the back of a handsome steed, exploring the countryside and admiring the vibrant blooms of the season. The scent of freshly cut hay, the sunshine on my face, the feeling of wind through my hair... pure bliss! You see, darling, there's just something about being on a horse that sets the soul free, don't you think? It's pure freedom, and oh so fabulous!
But back to Vienna, the City of Music, and its charming charm! Oh darling, this place is truly magical, full of history, culture, and a beautiful, whimsical atmosphere. From the ornate buildings and grand plazas to the stunning museums and vibrant markets, there's so much to see and do. I mean, we're talking Mozart, Strauss, the Imperial Palace, stunning architecture, coffee shops… It's every ballerina's dream destination! And yes, of course I've taken advantage of every opportunity to twirl and pose in my trusty pink tutu, and the Viennese people, bless their cotton socks, they’re all just as lovely as can be! There’s something so uplifting about wearing your heart on your sleeve… or rather, on your tutu, right?!
Speaking of twirling, this week’s adventures took me to a special event: the annual Vienna Ballet Gala! Oh darling, the costumes were dazzling, the music was divine, and the talent was phenomenal! From classic ballets like "Swan Lake" to more modern and contemporary performances, every act left me in awe.
Here are my highlights of the ballet, in case you missed it:
The Soloist: A breathtaking performance of passion and grace. The way the dancer held the stage, made me feel like I was floating alongside her. Every pirouette was precise, every leap powerful. I was absolutely spellbound! You see, darlings, sometimes, in the ballet world, a single performance can become a tiny jewel box, encapsulating beauty, dedication and so much artistry!
The Pas de Deux: A stunning dance duet where two performers tell a story through movement, expressing joy, sorrow, passion, and despair with every single step. I'll never get over how incredibly emotional these pieces can be. You can truly feel the connection between the dancers, and the love, respect and unspoken language is truly magical. You know I’m all about love and affection, right, darling?!
The Finale: This glorious act left me wanting more. There’s just nothing better than seeing all the dancers, the gorgeous costumes, the incredible music - a perfect storm of emotion and artistry - I think that’s how you'd describe the finale, darling. It’s like everyone comes together and becomes a whirlwind of colour and dance. Don’t forget your little tissues, darlings, it will be tear-jerkingly gorgeous!
And you know what’s lovely, darling? Vienna itself feels just as dazzling as the finale, all swirling and vibrant, with so much energy in the air. The ballet has given me inspiration to continue exploring, to twirl in every charming corner, and maybe even have a waltz myself!
It's this atmosphere that inspired me to go exploring - with my trusty pink tutu in tow, of course!
First stop, the Schönbrunn Palace. Now, let’s face it - any ballerina who fancies themselves as an Instagram princess just HAS to have an adorable pic in front of a gorgeous palace. This Baroque masterpiece, with its sprawling gardens and beautiful views, was simply exquisite. It's no wonder they used to call it "the most beautiful royal residence in the world," darling!
My visit wouldn't have been complete without a delightful visit to the Spanish Riding School. Did you know this has been home to the Lippizaner horses since 1572? These majestic creatures are renowned for their elegance, strength, and training. Watching the horses performing their traditional "airs above the ground" left me awestruck. This performance is steeped in history and the horse trainers, or "Masters of Riding," are the custodians of an ancient art, ensuring this extraordinary tradition will carry on for generations to come! Of course, you already know how much I adore a graceful horse - I love their long legs, their luxurious manes and how their movement flows with the power of the wind, which always takes me back to my beloved Derbyshire countryside, where horses always hold a special place in my heart.
Naturally, no trip to Vienna would be complete without indulging in a delightful afternoon at a traditional coffeehouse. Imagine this, darling - beautiful plush velvet chairs, marble tables, the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the air, and exquisite pastries on offer. What could be more wonderful?! The ambiance was enchanting and the delicious coffee and cakes? Well, let’s just say my tutu almost had a sugar rush.
On this Wednesday, the 5th of June, it was time to soak up the beautiful, golden sunshine at the Prater park. It’s truly magnificent - this enormous green space in the heart of the city is like a breath of fresh air! The Giant Ferris wheel has been part of this enchanting park for more than 100 years and gives you panoramic views of Vienna that I will never forget. And, let's be honest, who doesn't love a ride on a giant Ferris wheel, with your trusty pink tutu and a perfect shot for the 'gram'?
Another thing I have to tell you, darling, the people in Vienna have the most fantastic sense of style! Every outfit is beautifully put together with attention to detail, and there’s such an elegant energy in the city. Even in the bustling markets, you find the most unique, fashionable items to discover. I may have indulged a bit in some shopping… well, it’s hard not to, when all your favourite pink tones and delicate styles are just begging to be worn!
But honestly, darling, all the fashion in the world won't make a city truly dazzling if it's not filled with a sense of joy and passion for the simple things, the little things that bring magic into life - like the perfect melody, the laughter of children playing in the park, the kindness of a stranger offering to help. And guess what, darling, I’ve found all of these in Vienna, so perhaps that’s the most enchanting thing about the city…it's more than just architecture and culture. Vienna’s soul, you see, it truly emanates joy.
Of course, I'll leave you with a thought for your day:
"Why are ballerinas so poised and elegant? Because they’re so well-balanced!"
Have a twirlingly, wonderful week! And if you’re heading to Vienna, make sure you get a good cup of coffee! I would love to hear your travel stories – feel free to share your own adventures in the comments.
Until next time, stay sparkly, darling!
Your Tutu-tastic,
Emma
