Vienna Waltz - Post Number 290 - 22nd November 2000

Hello my lovely readers! It's Emma, your tutu-clad travel companion, bringing you another week of fashion and ballet from a city steeped in both: Vienna!

This week, I'm absolutely bursting with excitement as my suitcase is packed with enough tulle to fill a small ballroom. I've arrived in the Austrian capital for a week of waltz, wiener schnitzel and a whole lot of pink. And yes, you guessed it, my pink tutu has been brought along too, naturally! It's a bold choice for Vienna, a city known for its elegant history and tradition. But, just wait, you'll see how my favourite garment makes a brilliant statement amongst the grandeur of Viennese culture.

As always, I'll be documenting my experiences with a sprinkle of girly magic, and sharing the best spots for tutu-wearing adventures in this enchanting city.

Travel in Style

Getting here was a delightful experience. It started with my favourite way to travel, a luxurious train journey from Salzburg. Watching the countryside roll by from a comfy window seat, with a glass of prosecco and my trusty travel book in hand, was a perfect way to soak in the scenic beauty of Europe. There's something about the rhythmic clatter of wheels against the track and the feeling of adventure that takes my breath away every time. But don't think for a second that I've let go of my love for all things equine! A short hop in a carriage pulled by a splendid pair of white horses delivered me from the station to my gorgeous hotel in the heart of the city, a romantic building full of history and elegance, just perfect for a ballerina like myself!

Fashion on the Danube

One thing I can't deny is that Viennese fashion has been a total inspiration. I've already filled my sketchbook with ideas from the stylish street scene, with ladies rocking sleek pencil skirts and sophisticated blazers and men sporting impeccably tailored suits and polished shoes. But fear not, my darling readers, the bright pinks and pastel colours have been sneaking into the wardrobes too, and I have already spotted a few delicate pink scarves, shimmering silk dresses and the occasional touch of blush-toned makeup.

Dance with the Stars

But the main reason I’ve landed in Vienna is, of course, for the ballet! I am thrilled to be seeing the Vienna State Opera's production of Giselle tonight, a classic ballet full of heart-wrenching romance and stunning choreography. The history of this magnificent building is fascinating, and its legendary ballet company boasts some of the finest dancers in the world. The perfect blend of romance, elegance and spectacle for this little ballerina. And for those of you who want a deeper dive into the history of ballet, I highly recommend visiting the Austrian Theatre Museum, where you can find fascinating exhibits tracing the evolution of ballet from its early roots to modern-day performances.

A Viennese Whirl

No trip to Vienna is complete without a visit to the legendary Hofburg Palace, the former imperial residence of the Habsburg dynasty. It's imposing grandeur and luxurious interiors are straight out of a fairytale, and my tutu found its way seamlessly into the scene - let's just say that there were a few awestruck visitors snapping pictures with my whimsical outfit. I also had a delightful stroll through the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace gardens. It's serene beauty, elegant statues, and quaint pavilions transport you back to a bygone era of grandeur. You know I had to find the perfect place for a tutu photo shoot.

Shopping in the City of Dreams

Shopping is always a high point of my travel adventures, and Vienna has not disappointed! It's a shopper's paradise, brimming with independent boutiques, designer stores, and hidden vintage gems. I can't resist a visit to the stylish department stores in the city centre, and a slight obsession with beautiful silk scarves and whimsical hats is developing already. Plus, there is an amazing street market, overflowing with handcrafted goodies and regional treats. You can see my favourite finds on my Instagram account this evening - it's @PinkTutu.

Sweet Indulgences

One thing Vienna is famous for is its decadent sweets. Every street corner seems to be brimming with cafes and bakeries selling delicious pastries, tortes, and Sachertorten. I have tried, oh so carefully, a piece or two already and, my goodness, my sweet tooth is delighted! From traditional Apfelstrudel (that apple strudel, it’s an absolute must-try!) to indulgent Mozartkugeln (these tiny chocolates are a taste of Vienna that you will be craving ever since!) There is no lack of delicious things to explore.

The City That Makes Me Twirl

Vienna, oh Vienna! I am truly enchanted. This city’s historical charm, breathtaking architecture, and romantic atmosphere have captured my heart, and there’s an undeniable energy here that gets me moving. The vibrant, musical soul of Vienna pulsates through the cobbled streets, inspiring even a little ballerina from Derbyshire to let her heart dance freely. There's no better way to describe this place than saying that it’s a tutu-worthy city, perfect for pirouettes and graceful walks along the Danube.

I will be leaving you with some wonderful pictures on the website later this week - watch this space!

Until next time, may your life be full of beauty, whimsy and lots of pink!

Warmly,

Emma xxx
