Vienna Waltz: A Pink Tutu Whirlwind - Blog Post #395

Wednesday, 27th November 2002

Good morning darlings!

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another fabulous foray into the world of pink tutus, grand ballet, and all things fabulously feminine. This week, I'm whisking you away to the heart of Europe - the magnificent, majestic, utterly enchanting city of Vienna!

You may know me as the Pink Tutu Girl, the Dancing Queen, or the Princess of Plié - whatever moniker you fancy, the mission remains the same: spreading the pink tutu love and sharing my adventures in the ballet world with you all. And my latest adventure? Well, darling, it involves waltzing through the streets of Vienna, surrounded by stunning architecture, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and the sound of Strauss waltzes echoing through the air.

This week, I traded my comfy Derbyshire train journeys for a thrilling, grand journey by rail to Vienna. I love a train journey! A little more sophisticated, a tad more glamorous than a normal bus ride, with charming carriage attendants and charming little teas served. The journey was quite a sight, the picturesque landscapes rushing by my window – fields ablaze in autumnal colours, charming villages with half-timbered houses, and finally, the majestic silhouette of Vienna’s St. Stephen's Cathedral piercing the skyline.

My first foray into the city centre, and my eyes popped wide! The cobbled streets were teeming with people enjoying the brisk autumn air, shops displayed sumptuous seasonal goods, and elegant horse-drawn carriages glided past. It was like stepping straight into a fairytale. Oh, to be whisked away in such elegance!

Vienna is a city synonymous with classical music, and where better to start than at the legendary Vienna State Opera? The building itself is a breathtaking example of late Baroque architecture. I even had a delightful glimpse of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra practicing during a quick stroll around the nearby Musikverein - talk about music in the air!

Of course, no visit to Vienna is complete without indulging in a little sartorial exploration, and what better than a trip to the opulent Wiener Staatsoper Boutique for some seriously stunning ballet shoes? The shelves are overflowing with exquisite, hand-crafted creations fit for a prima ballerina. While I already have a plethora of pretty pink tutus back at home, there's no stopping me from indulging in a new pair of pointe shoes, you know, just to complete the look.

Tomorrow, I am excited to explore the world of the Vienna Ballet, visiting the exquisite Ballet Institute, with its grand auditorium, studios, and an inspiring museum where the ghosts of legendary ballerinas still dance in the light filtering through ornate stained glass windows.

As I settle into Vienna’s magical atmosphere, I find myself drawn to the history of ballet in this grand city. It blossomed here during the 18th century, and this passion hasn’t faded one bit. I’ll be digging deep into Vienna's ballet heritage during my visit to the State Opera Library, which boasts a staggering collection of ballet scores and memorabilia, spanning centuries of dance.

On Thursday, I am planning on catching a ballet performance at the State Opera House - this is the most anticipated event of my trip! Imagine - a night of dancing under the golden glow of the grand chandelier. And guess what I’ll be wearing - a new, custom-designed tutu that has arrived just in time! Yes, darlings, a Vienna special - a tutu emblazoned with the city’s famous coat of arms, an elegant, swirling, pink vision, with a touch of silver thread to add some whimsical sparkle.

However, the Vienna experience is not just about museums and ballet. My adventures will include indulging in delicious Wiener Schnitzel, discovering hidden coffeeshops that serve Viennese coffee and decadent cakes, and taking a relaxing horse-drawn carriage ride through the picturesque Prater park, Vienna’s legendary amusement park - a real touch of whimsy for a pink tutu loving ballerina!

Of course, no visit to Austria is complete without a traditional folk dancing performance. I'll be taking in a vibrant show of "Austrian Dances" at a local venue. I'm eager to witness the intricate costumes, the lively rhythms and experience a taste of the country’s folklore.

Don’t forget, darlings, my mission is to spread the pink tutu love to every corner of the globe, one waltz at a time. So, grab your pink tutus, put on your dancing shoes, and join me on this fabulous, whirlwind tour of Vienna. There are adventures to be had, waltzes to be danced, and a city full of pink tutu magic to discover.

Until next week,

Emma xxx

This week's must-have Pink Tutu Tip: Don’t be afraid to embrace the fabulous side of life! Vienna is a city of beauty and elegance, so dress the part! A fluttery, pink tutu is the perfect way to add a touch of whimsy and sparkle to any occasion. I love pairing my tutus with a silk scarf or a dashing velvet hat.
