Vienna Calling: A Tutu-ful Time in the City of Waltz

#PinkTutuVienna Post #450 - Wednesday 17th December, 2003

Guten Tag, darlings! It’s your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, here, back with a fresh blog post straight from the heart of Vienna, the city of waltzes, pastries and, of course, fabulous fashion! As I sit here in my pink tutu – a sparkling pink number adorned with miniature crystals, by the way - I can almost hear the sweet strains of Strauss floating through the air. But let’s get straight to it, shall we? Vienna has simply enchanted me with its beautiful architecture, captivating culture and, of course, its delicious food.

This week, I had the pleasure of watching a truly exceptional ballet performance at the Vienna State Opera House. It was a breathtaking production of Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake", with dazzling costumes, flawless choreography and an absolutely mesmerizing performance from the lead ballerina. Speaking of ballet, my darling tutus and I spent an afternoon exploring the exquisite Museum of Theatre and Music, learning about the fascinating history of the Viennese ballet scene. It’s incredible how ballet, this elegant dance, has resonated through the ages, captivating hearts and minds across the centuries. Did you know that ballet as we know it today actually evolved from court dances in Renaissance Italy? It's truly an art form with such a rich heritage!

But darling, this city is not just about culture and performances! Shopping, of course, is an essential part of my trips. Yesterday, I discovered a delightful vintage boutique tucked away on a cobbled side street, filled with an array of gorgeous garments and accessories, many with a distinctly Edwardian flavour! I simply could not resist snagging a bewitching lavender dress with delicate lace sleeves. It was practically calling out to me to be twirled!

Oh, and the food! I could rave about the Vienna’s deliciousness for hours on end. From the melt-in-your-mouth Sachertorte – a chocolate cake with a delicious apricot jam centre, invented right here! – to the mouthwatering Wiener Schnitzel, everything is so unbelievably decadent. And the Viennese coffee! Don’t even get me started, my darlings! So rich, so dark, and so undeniably divine.

Now, a little peek into my adventures here in Vienna:

This Day in Vienna (Wednesday, 17th December, 2003)

  • Breakfast with the Strauss: This morning, I had breakfast at the elegant Cafe Sacher, enjoying a cup of that incredible Viennese coffee, accompanied by a delicious pastry filled with the most divine cream. They even had a plate of pastries dedicated to waltz maestro, Johann Strauss!

  • An Afternoon with Schönbrunn: I spent the afternoon exploring the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens. I mean, the sheer magnificence! There's so much to explore: the elegant palace itself, with its beautifully decorated rooms, the sprawling gardens with their statues and fountains, and the zoo, which houses a whole menagerie of adorable creatures. I found a cute squirrel wearing a pink bow! It’s quite charming, especially considering the city is considered one of the capitals of classical music.

  • A Waltz with the Ballet: As I mentioned, I saw an utterly mesmerising performance of “Swan Lake” this evening. The costumes were so exquisite – ethereal white and flowing black fabrics. The choreography was simply enchanting, the dancers moved with such grace and skill, and the music of Tchaikovsky filled the air with magic. The feeling of exhilaration is hard to explain, it was pure ballet bliss.

Now, to round off this delightful blog post, I shall leave you with a piece of wisdom that has been echoing through my mind all week: Life is meant to be twirled in. Don't be afraid to embrace the fun, wear a fabulous outfit, and dance to your own beat. After all, every day is an opportunity to embrace your inner ballerina and embrace the world with grace and style. And, of course, to spread a little bit of pink tutu love!

Love and Tutu hugs,
Emma
