Vienna Waltz: A Pink Tutu Pilgrimage (Post #489)

Wednesday 15th September 2004

Guten Tag, my darlings! It's your favourite pink-clad ballerina, Emma, back from a whirlwind week in the majestic city of Vienna. It feels like I've lived a lifetime in these past seven days, packed with waltzing, waltzing, and more waltzing! (Well, not just waltzing - lots of tutu-ing too, obviously.)

I arrived in Vienna feeling like a princess stepping out of a fairytale - or perhaps a fairytale stepping out of my pink tutu! The train journey was pure delight, gliding through fields of sunflowers and rolling green hills. I settled into my comfy compartment with a glass of bubbly and a good book, all while sporting my latest pink tutu acquisition – a floaty, feather-light confection in the palest shade of rose pink. It was the perfect attire for such a romantic journey!

Speaking of romantic, Vienna itself is a haven for hopeless romantics, especially one with a fondness for swirling skirts and a passion for history. Every corner breathes with a rich heritage and a sense of elegant grace. I was enthralled by the grandeur of the Schönbrunn Palace, a vision of imperial splendor, its gardens filled with exquisite flowers, perfectly manicured, just like a tutu’s tulle layers. The palace gardens, they truly are the perfect stage for a romantic promenade. And what better way to explore it than in a horse-drawn carriage, the clip-clop of hooves echoing the waltz of the Viennese streets?

Naturally, no trip to Vienna would be complete without a trip to the iconic Vienna State Opera House. As I gazed upon its majestic facade, I couldn't help but feel a little bit star-struck! And then the magic truly began. Stepping into the opulent theatre was a sensory feast - ornate carvings, crimson velvet, the scent of history in the air. I was transported to a world of swirling music, breathtaking costumes, and soaring melodies. Oh, the ballets I saw! There was the grandeur of "Swan Lake," the sweeping drama of "Romeo and Juliet," and the playful energy of "The Nutcracker." Each performance left me breathless, filled with a renewed appreciation for the art of dance and the magic of a live performance. It was as if I was a part of the choreography, spinning with the dancers and flying across the stage, fueled by the magic of the music.

Speaking of music, did I mention I even had a waltz lesson in the heart of the city, twirling under the guidance of a kind, patient instructor? It was surprisingly more difficult than it looks! But I, of course, managed to impress him with my perfect pirouette - it must be all the practice from twirling in my beloved tutus.

One of the absolute highlights of my week was a private tutu-themed shopping spree at the Stadtpark's exquisite vintage clothing stores. I emerged triumphant, with an entire suitcase full of exquisite pieces, from vintage silk shrugs and decadent beaded jackets to an array of lace gloves and antique-style purses. Now, to find the perfect pink tutu to complete these gorgeous outfits...

In the evenings, I treated myself to delicious Viennese pastries (with a touch of whipped cream, of course - I must maintain a ballerina’s figure) and a glass of delicious local wine at cozy sidewalk cafés. There’s just something magical about the twinkling lights, the scent of coffee in the air, and the sound of conversations in a language I don’t fully understand. Vienna, you’ve woven yourself into the very fabric of my pink-tutu-clad heart!

So, my lovelies, that's my Vienna story! I'm leaving you today with a yearning to twirl under a Vienna sky, and a new-found appreciation for the city's waltzing elegance.

Now, on to my next adventure - until then, wear your pink tutus with pride, dance to the rhythm of life, and spread the pink love!

Until next week, darling dears!

Yours in pink,

Emma
