Pink Tutu Vienna: Post #609: The Waltz of the Wiener Staatsoper (Wednesday, 3rd January, 2007)

Dearest readers! The train journey from London was positively delightful, a swish of silver carriages gliding through the French countryside, punctuated by steaming cups of tea and charming conversations with a couple who were en route to a vintage clothing convention in Paris!

Oh, I simply must tell you all about it, this trip is just brimming with inspiration, from the crisp air of a snowy Austrian morning to the rich, warm glow of the Vienna Staatsoper. The grandeur of this historic building! One could practically smell the history as we strolled towards its magnificent doors. I’d been lucky enough to snag two tickets, and what a show it was! It was the perfect beginning to what is sure to be a most memorable visit to this beautiful city.

Firstly, let me regale you with my wardrobe choices for this particular venture. Naturally, my darling pink tutu took centre stage, in a shade that mirrored the rosy blush of the Austrian dawn, just bursting with joyous optimism! It's all about feeling happy and confident, you know? To complete the look, a delicate white lace top adorned with tiny silver sequins – a perfect match for the Viennese silver sleigh bells that chime around the city! For an added touch of whimsy, I layered a pale pink silk scarf over my shoulder, giving it a Parisian flourish. And for warmth, a chic black peacoat with fur trim to weather the icy breeze. As for my hair, a delicate, yet sophisticated French twist that whispered secrets of Vienna's romantic past. I do love to feel put together and stylish, whilst still managing to retain a hint of that playful ballet magic.

And oh, the performance! It was a sumptuous affair – a lavish production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. I felt my heart melt as the ballerinas danced with such elegance and grace, every movement a breathtaking feat of beauty and strength. I particularly loved the white tutus of the swans – a stunning contrast to the dramatic black of the costumes of the Prince’s evil adversary, making each tableau all the more impactful. The music was enchanting, drawing me into the world of the tale with its vibrant and poignant notes. It truly was a ballet experience to treasure!

After the performance, we found ourselves amongst the chattering crowd exiting the Opera House. It was a delightful, electric atmosphere, as if everyone was bursting with the joyous spirit of the music. The streets were illuminated with fairy lights, and a crisp winter chill hung in the air.

As we walked down the street, I spied a charming little tea room, all dainty floral wallpapers and gingham tablecloths, invitingly filled with the aromas of hot chocolate and warm apple strudel. How could I resist?

With a hot chocolate cradled in my hands and a slice of decadent apple strudel before me, I took in the charm of this captivating city. A magical aura seemed to envelop me as the strains of waltzes wafted from unseen sources, reminding me of Vienna’s rich cultural heritage and its enchanting musical soul.

Later that afternoon, a leisurely stroll through the heart of Vienna brought us face-to-face with the towering majesty of the Hofburg Palace. With its opulent facade, ornate interiors and royal history, it exuded an air of elegance and power. I couldn’t help but imagine the lavish balls and grand celebrations that once took place within its walls!

And then there was Schönbrunn Palace – its beautifully preserved gardens filled with frost-kissed foliage and majestic sculptures, all bathed in the soft light of the setting sun. A gentle stillness hung in the air, and as I wandered through its paths, I couldn’t help but imagine myself transported back to a time when elegant carriages trundled down its avenues and royal families strolled through its grounds. It was an idyllic spot for an afternoon dream!

Dinner was a delicious affair – the traditional Wiener Schnitzel was a culinary revelation! Tender, crispy and oh so satisfying. We dined by candlelight at a cozy little restaurant with exposed brick walls and a menu overflowing with local specialties. I had a most delightful chat with the gentleman next to me – he was an art connoisseur with an impressive collection of paintings, and a keen appreciation for vintage tutus!

It was after midnight when I finally settled into my hotel room. With my pink tutu carefully draped over the chair, and my thoughts overflowing with the day’s exciting experiences, I knew I’d dreamt of this journey to Vienna for years, and now it was even more magnificent than I could have ever imagined!

Oh, and you simply must visit the magnificent Belvedere Palace - the beautiful museum is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture! And, speaking of masterpieces, what ballet would you choose to experience in Vienna? Do share your suggestions below!

With a twirl and a sprinkle of pixie dust,

Emma x

P.S. I do hope you’re all inspired to add a splash of pink to your wardrobes. Remember, there’s no rule against a little sparkle in life. It’s all about embracing your inner joy and making every day a celebration!
