Pink Tutu Vienna - Post 972: Waltz into Wonderland!
Wednesday 18th December 2013
Guten Tag, my darlings!
It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad correspondent, reporting live from the utterly enchanting city of Vienna, Austria! And trust me, Vienna has swept me off my feet faster than a graceful pirouette!
I arrived in the early hours, whisked here by the luxurious Vienna sleeper train. Let's just say, first class is truly first class – spacious compartments, plush velvet seats, complimentary champagne (who could resist!), and a stunning view of the snow-capped Austrian Alps at dawn. Absolutely divine!
The first thing I noticed about Vienna, besides the fairytale architecture and festive Christmas lights, was the absolute abundance of tutus! Everywhere you look, from the elegant boutiques on Kärntner Strasse to the quirky independent shops on Mariahilfer Strasse, there's a sprinkle of tulle in every window display! I mean, my dears, it's simply fabulous!
My mission? To discover the hidden treasures of Vienna, both for fashion and for ballet!
First on my agenda was a quick pit stop at the Hofburg Palace, where, oh my, the historical ballet costume exhibit is breathtaking. Think shimmering silks, extravagant feather headdresses, and delicate point shoes – it's like stepping straight into a romantic ballet story!
Later, I made a detour to Stephansdom for a bit of peaceful contemplation (and a selfie in front of the majestic gothic facade, obviously). This city is simply overflowing with history! It felt so magical wandering through the cobbled streets, my tutu twirling lightly, imagining the grandeur of waltzing Emperors and Empresss long ago.
And speaking of waltzing… this evening, I am attending a Strauss Ball at the beautiful Vienna State Opera! Yes, a real, life ball, complete with swirling ball gowns, dashing gentlemen in tails, and the music of the great Strauss himself! The highlight, you ask? I'm hoping to have a go at a proper Viennese waltz in the company of the most dapper Viennese gentleman! Fingers crossed, dear readers!
Speaking of shopping, my dear lovelies, let me tell you about the beautiful boutiques that line the city streets. I’m practically living in my favourite pink coat and a darling little tutu. They’re perfect for gliding through the Christmas markets and sipping Gluhwein from dainty cups.
Of course, the Christmas Markets in Vienna are just enchanting. My friend in London said that you can get a good curry wurst at a Christmas Market and that I should try one. Absolutely not. Where is the fun in eating food that’s not traditionally Viennese? So I’m indulging in all the wonderful food that the market offers – think sugared almonds, roasted chestnuts and stollen! It’s so good! I might have eaten some roasted almonds already...but don’t tell my friend.
In the evenings, the Vienna State Opera beckons! And it's not just the famous performances, dear readers, but also the wonderful history of this grand old house! We're talking about the original home of Strauss waltzes and iconic figures like Johann Strauss, Jr. I’ve bought a ticket for Thursday’s ballet – ‘Don Quixote’ - I've got my pinkest tutu and the biggest, most glittering smile at the ready for this one! I just can't wait!
And I’ll tell you all about it, next Wednesday!
From a swirlingly fabulous Vienna,
Your eternally pink-tutu-clad friend,
Emma.
Emma’s Viennese Wish List
So, my dearest friends, you are dying to see Vienna? I think it’s a MUST, absolutely essential on your tutu-tastic bucket list. And what should you put on that wish list? Let me suggest:
For the tutu-tastic:
- Attend a Vienna State Opera performance: Trust me, you've never seen anything so glamorous. The performances are top notch, the architecture breathtaking. Plus, the fashion! Be prepared to swoon over the audience in their gowns, suits, and sparkling jewels!
- Catch a show at the Musikverein: Known as one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world, the Musikverein is a dream for music lovers! My dears, prepare for stunning performances by some of the best orchestras on the planet, and of course, an ambiance that will leave you feeling like royalty.
- Visit the Kunsthistorisches Museum: They’ve got ballet paintings galore – the perfect inspiration for those tutu outfits. It's home to an extensive art collection, so don't miss it for the incredible architecture too!
For the gourmand:
- Enjoy a traditional Viennese dinner: Don't miss the iconic Wiener Schnitzel (think thin-cut breaded veal), Sachertorte (the most famous chocolate cake in Vienna), and Apfelstrudel (the melt-in-your-mouth apple pastry).
- Hit up a Christmas market: Think warm, glühwein, twinkling lights, festive decorations and handmade gifts! What’s more festive?
- * Indulge in some delicious pastries:* Viennese coffee culture is world-famous, and the city's bakeries are heaven on earth. I highly recommend a delicious Apfelstrudel with vanilla custard for an unforgettable pastry experience!
For the fashionable:
- Explore the luxury boutiques on Kärntner Strasse: A shopping haven! Look for exclusive brands and haute couture designers, from the classic to the utterly modern!
- Dive into the trendy shops on Mariahilfer Strasse: If you're seeking independent brands and more bohemian vibes, this is your street! Find a beautiful dress, a pair of fabulous shoes – anything that makes your heart skip a beat!
Getting to Vienna
- By Train: This is Emma's absolute favourite way to travel, especially when it’s a luxurious sleeper train with all the mod-cons.
- By Plane: Of course, there are countless airports in Europe for those who prefer to take to the skies!
By Car: Drive your very own pink Fiat 500! (If only, dears!)
Vienna has a certain magic that I think will capture the hearts of every traveller, whether they wear pink tutus or not!
So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, buy a ticket, and waltz on down to this magical city – you won't regret it!
Till next Wednesday,
Emma
