Vienna Calling: A Tutu Tale of Waltz and Whimsy (Post #1115)
Guten Tag, darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing travel-trotter, Emma, reporting live from the enchanting city of Vienna. I know, I know, you're all probably wondering "why Vienna, Emma? What about Paris, Rome, London?". Well, while those cities are undeniably chic, Vienna holds a special place in my heart. This city, my loves, is the heart of the waltz, the home of waltzing, the birthplace of the waltz, the waltz, THE waltz, my darlings. And I, as you know, have a bit of a waltzing problem – it's a real thing, it is! You should see my graceful moves – cough. Anyway, Vienna is truly a whirlwind of waltz-worthy excitement and my dear pink tutu and I are practically waltzing our way through this captivating city, taking in the beautiful architecture, soaking up the culture, and yes, indulging in the exquisite pastries, * natürlich!*
I know, you're dying to hear about all the amazing things I've seen, so buckle up, darlings, because this is going to be a bit of a whirlwind!
A Train Ride Through TimeYou're never too old for a bit of train travel, and I particularly love the old-fashioned train rides that meander through the Austrian countryside. There's something truly charming about those journeys – you know, the rattling windows, the occasional cloud of steam puffing out, the soft clickety-clack of the wheels on the track. And then, the journey isn't just about getting to your destination, it's about the whole experience, and enjoying the world passing you by! So, I travelled to Vienna from Prague, passing by the breathtaking rolling hills of Bohemia, vineyards sprawling across the landscape like a patchwork quilt, all under a sky of the most perfect, dreamy blue. And it felt like stepping back in time - the way the carriages gently sway as the train turns, the sun glistening on the chrome fixtures... Pure romance, darling! I practically saw an image of myself in a vintage dress, clutching a stack of romance novels and wearing, of course, my best pink tutu – because one needs to look fab while taking in the romance of a train ride, doesn't one?
My Viennese Waltz: Dancing into the Heart of the CityUpon arriving in Vienna, the first thing that hit me was the music – a beautiful melody that floated through the streets like an invisible string pulling me deeper and deeper into the city's magic. And I knew instantly, my darlings, that I was surrounded by music and dance, and by history that is steeped in the rich cultural heritage of waltz, ballet, and theatre! Now, who can resist a good waltz? This city is an absolute treasure trove for any ballerinas out there - the beautiful theatres, the magnificent opera houses, the charming cobblestone streets… They all whisper stories of graceful waltzing and ballerinas twirling on stage. I simply cannot wait to spend a night at the Vienna State Opera, take in a traditional Viennese waltz performance and let the music sweep me off my feet!
The Palais of the Past, a Royal DreamMy very first day in Vienna, darling, was dedicated to exploring the stunning Hofburg Palace. This place was once home to royalty, the Habsburg Emperors and Empresses who ruled Austria for centuries, but, oh, so much more. They built it in stages over about six hundred years! Imagine how many waltzes could have happened here! I absolutely adore palaces; there is such a wonderful atmosphere and I simply cannot resist feeling the ghost of waltzing steps from centuries ago!
A Fashion Feast at the Kärntner StraßeNow, after a morning of historical explorations, it was time for a little bit of retail therapy! A little trip along Kärntner Straße - which, if you haven't been there, my darlings, is THE place for luxury shopping in Vienna - filled with beautiful boutiques and exquisite department stores. The shops are all beautifully curated, and there's an elegant sense of refinement that truly sets them apart from anything I've ever seen before. It's all about quality, craftsmanship, and tradition, my love. So, I picked up some amazing finds – some new blush-toned pumps and a fabulous pink velvet bag to pair with my signature tutu, naturally! I might have even treated myself to a delightful little waltz dress that’ll be perfect for the waltz lessons I'm signing up for later this week! I can't wait to embrace my inner Viennese princess!
A Pastry Perfection: Sacher-torteBut even the most devoted fashionista has to break for a sweet treat, am I right? And in Vienna, darling, the ultimate indulgence is the iconic Sacher-torte! Have you had it? I'm telling you, the flavour is decadent – dark chocolate cake filled with apricot jam, topped with a chocolate glaze that simply melts in your mouth! I could not resist having a slice at the Café Sacher Wien, where the torte was first created back in 1832, and, darling, it is so rich that you have to pace yourself! Vienna definitely takes dessert to the next level, so be prepared to get a little bit messy! I think we all have to learn to love our sugar fixes, my love! But I can assure you, dear reader, I savoured every single bite and made it the perfect finale to my day of waltzing through Viennese delights!
My Tutu Wishlist: Dancing into Vienna’s CharmAnd so, my lovely readers, my trip to Vienna continues to fill me with so much joy! It is full of charm and, of course, beauty. There's something truly special about being in a city where history and culture are so intricately intertwined, where elegance is ingrained in the very fabric of everyday life. It's hard to be anything but charmed by Vienna, my darlings! But remember, it's never enough for me to simply soak in the beauty – I have to spread my love for the ballet, and yes, for tutus, with the world.
So, if you're thinking of making a trip to Vienna soon, here are a few must-dos from yours truly:
Must Do's in Vienna
Indulge in a Sacher-Torte at the Café Sacher: This classic Viennese dessert is an absolute must-have, and I dare say, the Viennese delicacy. Don't be afraid to take your time savouring every mouthful - it's a truly decadent experience.
Explore the Hofburg Palace: You will be mesmerized by the history, grandeur and splendor that was once home to Habsburg Emperors and Empresses. Take your time exploring the various chambers, the Imperial Apartments and the treasure trove of museums within this sprawling palace, but do dress for the occasion in something pretty; you never know which history you will run into!
Waltz at the Schönbrunn Palace: I am dying to dance the waltz in the gorgeous surroundings of the Schönbrunn Palace, surrounded by beauty! The architecture and garden are simply breathtaking.
Catch a ballet performance at the Vienna State Opera: The Viennese ballet is legendary! Immerse yourself in the artistry of one of the world's premier ballet companies. I will be writing about this experience later in my Vienna Blog so keep your eyes peeled for more exciting tales, darlings!
Explore the vibrant markets: The markets are bursting with life and flavour. They're a wonderful place to experience local culture, taste the regional delicacies, and, of course, buy a souvenir!
Discover a Hidden Gem: And darling, the best things are found when you venture off the beaten track, into the less touristy parts of the city and discover charming, hidden corners like Vienna’s local bakery, tucked away in a peaceful neighborhood!
Vienna has already captured my heart with its romantic charm and its intoxicating waltz beat. I know I'm only just starting to scratch the surface of this beautiful city, so watch this space. It’s a city begging to be explored in every beautiful detail – but even though I am obsessed with ballet, the art, the fashion and the theatre, don’t forget – in a place like Vienna, you have to allow the beautiful and graceful waltz to take over your senses. It’s intoxicating, and truly delightful, and a feeling I would recommend every one of you to experience!
Until next time, my dears! I leave you with this simple question – Do you love a good waltz? Because I definitely do, darling, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
XOXO, Emma
PS: I am still obsessed with the color pink. Can you tell?
