Hello my darling darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu wearing ballerina, writing to you from the heart of Vienna, Austria. As you know, my love for ballet is deep and everlasting, but it's a tie with my love for a fab tutu, and believe me, the streets of Vienna have some fabulously fabulous tutu-worthy looks on offer.
I travelled by train from Paris to get here - the Eurostar is such a wonderful way to travel. I managed to squeeze a cheeky ballet performance in before heading off. It was the 'Firebird' and my outfit, my dears, was inspired by it's gorgeous, fiery imagery - a shocking pink tulle tutu (with some serious ruffles, obvs!), paired with a burnt orange fitted top and fiery red statement earrings. I love how a good tutu can be dressed up or down.
And oh my goodness! The streets of Vienna have just wowed me with their elegant beauty and history. They make for the perfect ballet performance setting. Imagine swanning through the beautiful streets, taking in the architectural marvels in a fluffy pink tutu! You’d just want to pirouette all over the place! I can't wait to visit some of Vienna's historic buildings – the Vienna State Opera House (such stunning interiors, all grand and glitzy) is on my list. It’s definitely worth a visit for its architecture and atmosphere even if you don’t fancy seeing a show.
Speaking of tutus, Vienna has a truly fascinating story when it comes to ballet. The city's ballet tradition stretches back centuries and they say Vienna was the birth place of ballet in Central Europe. Now, a trip to Vienna wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Vienna State Opera House, which was constructed in 1869. It’s just magnificent. As you enter the grand theatre with its intricate architecture, your heart starts to thrum. The theatre seats an impressive 1,700 people, each of whom get a chance to enjoy the superb acoustics and beautiful decoration, which has been very well maintained for well over a hundred years. In fact, the opera house’s lavish architecture and magnificent interior is said to have inspired Mozart himself when he composed "The Marriage of Figaro." This place really oozes opulence. There’s a certain energy and grandeur about the entire building which makes it quite a place to be.
Now, we all know how important it is to research a place’s ballet history when you arrive - you can't just turn up and pirouette into the street with absolutely no respect for the local tradition. That’s why I love to visit Vienna’s world renowned Hofburg Palace to catch the imperial atmosphere - I can picture the emperors and empresses enjoying ballet in the same halls I’m standing in right now. Can’t you just see them twirling around? I was fortunate to be in town for a classical ballet performance by the Vienna State Opera Ballet. The company, one of the most esteemed in Europe, had gathered its best and brightest performers in a celebration of grace and technical perfection. And they even had an actual, real-life carriage available for hire, so of course, I had to make my grand entrance in style, complete with a swirling pink tutu and an impish grin. Because even the most important ballet performances deserve a pink tutu, darlings! They all do!
It’s not all grand theatres and regal palaces, you know. The Viennese people take their ballet to the streets. The lively street performers in the centre of the city often get caught up in their own waltzes and dances, spinning around the crowds like they're at a performance at the Wiener Staatsoper itself. Vienna has this truly incredible vibrant art scene.
This past weekend I indulged in a spot of shopping for my beloved tutu collection and, oh my, the Vienna vintage markets have some unbelievable bargains! And with a bit of love and attention, I even scored some amazing tutus. I mean, when you find a fabulous vintage tutu, you simply have to snap it up! Who could possibly resist a classic vintage tulle creation with so much charm?
After my whirlwind ballet-inspired weekend, I have to admit, I feel so happy. I was truly blessed to be in Vienna on this day and my inner ballerina truly blossomed, soaking in all this fantastic inspiration for tutus, theatre and travel. I think it's definitely one for my personal Pink Tutu Vienna travel journal! It has me dreaming about my next ballerina-themed adventure already.
Oh, and one last thing! Did you know July 14th, this very day, marks the annual “Ball of the Tutus” event in Vienna. You won't find a prettier sight, believe me!
