Bonjour from Vienna, my lovelies! The sun is shining, the birds are singing (or are they humming the theme to "The Sound of Music?"), and this city is simply radiating with its signature charm. It's officially summer, and you know what that means: tutus are out in full force.
This week I've been waltzing my way through Vienna, embracing every ounce of its beautiful architecture, breathtaking history and, of course, its unparalleled ballet scene. You simply can't talk about Vienna without mentioning the Wiener Staatsballet (Vienna State Ballet). They are world class, darlings, and I just had the most exquisite time at their summer production of "Swan Lake." Every feather on Odette's tutu was perfect. Perfection.
But before we delve into the graceful world of tutus and twirls, let's have a spot of tea!
My Vienna Story: From Derby to Vienna
Now, you might be wondering, how does a pink-tutu-clad ballerina from Derbyshire, England end up in the heart of Vienna? Well, it's a long story, so settle in with your Earl Grey and let's rewind...
I always loved ballet. As a child, I dreamt of becoming a ballerina, of taking to the stage and dazzling audiences with my spins and leaps. That dream hasn't faded - it just took a few different turns. When I realized that life as a prima ballerina wasn't exactly in the cards (I'm a touch short, if you catch my drift!), I knew I had to find another way to celebrate the dance I loved.
And then, Pink Tutu was born!
I started by blogging about ballet – everything from its history to the best tutu shops in London. Soon enough, my passion for the dance blossomed into something bigger. People connected with my love for the extravagance, the glamour, the sheer joy of it all.
My blogs evolved to include everything pink (pink is my happy place, you know), travelling (the best way to experience different cultures and discover new ballet companies), fashion (who doesn't love a good vintage tutu?) and of course, my much-loved tutu designs.
A Dance through History
Now, as we explore this charming city, I can't help but be utterly swept away by its history. It’s like stepping into a ballet performance, with a captivating plot of empires and waltzes and captivating music! The palaces, the cobbled streets, the museums... Everywhere you turn, there’s another glimpse into Vienna's rich and vibrant past.
Just last night, I found myself at the Hofburg Palace, a place steeped in royal history. Imagine this: a palace where Emperors once reigned, where music and art thrived. This place pulsates with memories of waltz parties, extravagant banquets, and grand opera houses. Walking through these halls, I couldn't help but imagine the glittering gowns, the delicate ballet shoes, and the soft strums of a string quartet filling the air.
The Viennese waltz was born in a royal court! Think about that for a moment. The history, the elegance, the romanticism - It's almost too much to take in.
Ballet Blooms in Vienna
Of course, Vienna wouldn't be Vienna without its legendary ballet heritage. As we stroll down the charming cobbled streets, it’s almost as if we're walking alongside waltzing couples! The Vienna State Ballet has been mesmerizing audiences for decades with its graceful moves and impeccable performances.
And speaking of impeccable performances, did I mention Swan Lake was on at the State Opera House? The artistry was absolutely breathtaking. Those swans were majestic, with their delicate costumes and powerful movements! Even I, a ballet aficionado, found myself awestruck. It’s as if the theatre itself becomes an enchanting world where swans take flight and magic comes to life.
Tutus on the Streets of Vienna
I love a good vintage find, and you simply can't talk about vintage ballet without mentioning tutus. Now, in my experience, the vintage stores of Vienna are truly a wonderland of tutu treasures. I've already picked up a stunning pair of 1930s tulle-layered pink tutus - I might just wear it for my visit to the Schönbrunn Palace gardens tomorrow!
Even though I haven't purchased one just yet, you never know what might pop up during my journey.
Vienna isn't afraid of color, that's for sure! The people embrace individuality and their passion for the art of dance radiates through everything from street art and ballet performances, to the very streets you walk down.
Vienna's street performers, too, are a sight to behold. Whether they are playing a lively Mozart melody on their violin, spinning their colorful hoops with the rhythm of the waltzing crowds, or dancing in en pointe amongst the cafes, it is hard not to feel your own spirit rise and start dancing alongside.
The other day, a lovely little girl walked past me on her way to ballet class, her pink tutu flowing gently in the breeze, a little grin on her face, as if she was floating on a cloud of pink tulle! I just had to stop and compliment her! It made my day to see this future generation embrace the joy of dance.
I also found myself stopping for a tea-time moment (the cakes in Vienna are something else, darling!), right across the street from a street ballet performance. Watching those ballet shoes float effortlessly was magical. These talented individuals are bringing the magic of dance directly to the streets.
Tutu Shopping Extravaganza
This city, is not only brimming with a vibrant dance scene, it's also the perfect destination for tutu lovers! If you’re looking to buy a vintage ballet treasure, look no further.
After my swan lake trip, I was off to one of Vienna’s oldest fashion houses - it is practically bursting at the seams with gorgeous tulle and lace designs from all eras.
My dear friend Fiona (an avid vintage tutu enthusiast!), knows a few hidden gems tucked away in the backstreets of Vienna, and she always finds the most incredible pieces for a bargain. Her last discovery was a fabulous tutu dating back to the 1880s - complete with a perfectly preserved feather trim. (Just think, imagine how many stories that little tutu could tell!)
It truly was a sight to behold. Fiona swears it once belonged to the famous ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska. Now, that is a name I'd love to drop at one of Vienna’s grand salons! Imagine sipping champagne amongst a society of elegant ladies, while sporting a perfectly vintage ballerina gown, sharing stories of a ballet legend from Vienna's glorious past.
Of course, nothing is too much trouble if it means a new story for your tutu to tell, and as any true ballerina will tell you, a touch of pink always makes the perfect finale.
But that's just a sneak peek at my upcoming shopping adventures! I've heard of a few exclusive couture designers who are putting out some seriously magical tutus, all for those true lovers of the stage.
The Pink Tutu life is an exciting one!
Onward to More Tutu-tastic Adventures!
I am on my way to Salzburg on a whim! My heart is set on a beautiful, historic hotel nestled on a hill with magnificent views - The Hotel Sacher. Imagine that: waltzing on cobbled streets in Austria, a little piece of magic every moment of the day.
So stay tuned for another enchanting tale - next Wednesday, as we delve into the enchantment of Salzburg. And, of course, keep those pink tutus close. The world is ready for a little extra sparkle!
