Guten Tag, darling readers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad adventurer, Emma, writing to you live from the magnificent city of Vienna, Austria.
This week has been a whirlwind of waltzes, waltzes, and more waltzes! Vienna, as you all know, is the city of music and culture, and let me tell you, I'm utterly smitten. Every corner whispers of history, elegance, and a certain joie de vivre that makes my heart flutter.
I arrived on Monday, a train journey that whisked me across the beautiful German countryside in a flurry of emerald fields and charming little villages. I boarded the train straight from a performance in Derbyshire, so I was naturally in full tutu mode. And let me tell you, there is no better way to travel.
Vienna has welcomed me with open arms, or rather, with a grand parade of magnificent buildings. From the iconic Schönbrunn Palace, where I found myself imagining Empress Elisabeth swirling in her exquisite gowns, to the towering St. Stephen's Cathedral, a symbol of the city's strong spirit, this city truly captures the heart.
Fashion Finds and Ballerina Delights
Naturally, no trip to Vienna is complete without a dose of shopping. The Graben, with its luxurious boutiques and charming cafes, is a haven for fashionistas like myself. I snagged a stunning vintage hat, perfect for adding a touch of Viennese flair to my tutu collection, and a delicate silver necklace, inspired by the city's elegant architecture.
Vienna's rich cultural heritage extends beyond grand palaces and historical squares. As you can imagine, I'm in ballet heaven here! I saw a captivating performance at the Vienna State Opera last night, a sumptuous production of Swan Lake, the exquisite music transporting me into a world of magic.
But it's not all grand ballet for this tutu-wearing traveller. Today, I experienced the joy of ballet class at a beautiful studio tucked away in a cobbled alley. The rhythmic clinking of ballet shoes on polished wooden floors filled the air, the scent of old wood and a gentle wave of music swirling around the room. It was pure magic, even if I had to laugh at my clumsy attempts at fouetté turns!
Tutu Timelines
While the waltzes are captivating, the city's ballet history is just as fascinating. My explorations took me to the Austrian Theatre Museum, where I marvelled at historical costumes, set designs, and intricate hand-drawn sketches of past productions. They have a collection of old tutus on display which was divine! One piece of Victorian pink tulle was especially captivating. My tutu-loving heart swooned. I'm also determined to find out more about the tutu's evolution in the region – they were famously designed to mimic the delicate shape of the feathers of swans and I want to explore their early beginnings.
Speaking of historical figures, Vienna is a city that reverberates with the legacies of great minds – from Mozart to Beethoven, Klimt to Freud. Their legacies add an incredible layer of intrigue to my explorations.
Riding a Horse through Vienna
Vienna's charm extends beyond the urban scene, with the stunning Schönbrunn Gardens offering an idyllic escape from the bustling city life. Today, I enjoyed a breathtaking ride through the park on horseback. I wore my latest pink tutu with a velvet jacket and my long, flowing curls blowing in the gentle wind. As I cantered through the lush green paths, a beautiful vista of the city unfolded, reminding me of how much I truly love embracing the beauty of life, and how it seems to be so perfectly woven into the fabric of Vienna.
I’ve planned a romantic carriage ride for later in the week. Can you imagine, with the twinkling city lights and the rhythmic clip-clop of hooves? The magic of Vienna continues to unfold with each passing day!
Dinner with a view - A taste of Vienna
My explorations have also been flavoured with Viennese cuisine! The classic Wiener Schnitzel, served with a crisp salad and potato salad, is a delightful treat, and the traditional Apfelstrudel, a sweet and flaky pastry filled with apples, is pure indulgence. I must say the Strudel and Viennese coffee I savoured on a café terrace overlooking the majestic St. Stephen's Cathedral was divine.
Vienna: The City of Pink Tutues!
With each step I take through Vienna's captivating streets, I find myself becoming more and more smitten with the city. Every street corner seems to whisper secrets, each historical landmark whispers stories, and every sunset paints the sky with a beautiful kaleidoscope of colours. It truly is the city of dreams!
Vienna, in a word, is truly beautiful. And, of course, I've worn my pink tutu every single day. You know, spreading the message, inspiring others. After all, who says ballet can't be enjoyed by everyone? I know that the lovely people of Vienna agree with me!
Join me again next week, as I share my continued adventures in Vienna, and perhaps, even introduce you to some of the lovely people who are finally coming to embrace the pink tutu.
Until then, let your inner ballerina twirl!
Your pink tutu pal,
Emma
