Darling readers,
Greetings from Vienna, the city of waltzes and wonders, where the air itself seems to hum with melody and where every street corner feels like a scene from a grand opera! It's a city that whispers of imperial grandeur, echoing with the stories of waltzing princesses and emperors. But beyond the waltz-infused fairytale, there's a vibrant, playful spirit that draws me in, and I just know you'll adore it too!
A Derbyshire Girl in Vienna
This week, as the leaves start to turn fiery reds and golds, the atmosphere in Vienna takes on a special magic. It feels like the entire city has been dusted with fairy dust, and everyone, from street performers to grand opera singers, has a sparkle in their eye. You can feel the excitement of a city waking up from its summer slumber, ready to embrace the cooler weather and the coming festivities.
This, my darlings, is where I feel completely at home. Ever since I started travelling the world in my pink tutu, sharing my love for ballet with every town and city, Vienna has held a special place in my heart.
This week has been full of surprises and delights - from a morning at the Vienna State Opera to an afternoon wandering the historic Prater, and, of course, no trip to Vienna would be complete without a spot of ballet class at the legendary Vienna State Ballet. But first, let's start at the beginning…
Vienna’s Ballet: From Royal Courtiers to Stars of the Stage
My journey began in Vienna on a crisp Wednesday morning, just after the sun had kissed the cobblestone streets with its first rays of light. I love the peace of this early hour. I set off to the Vienna State Opera house. Even just looking at it takes me back to the 18th century, back to the grandeur of the Hapsburg Empire and the legacy of ballet. Imagine: ladies with powdered wigs and gentleman with ornate brocades and ruffles attending dazzling ballet performances right here!
Inside the State Opera house, I felt a shiver of anticipation and awe, just like all those courtiers who stood right here hundreds of years ago. There was a buzz in the air, a hum of excited voices. I loved hearing people talking about the upcoming opera. I joined in, sharing my love of the magic of opera and how each performance is a journey.
Walking through the hallways, I could almost see them all, those first ballet dancers - their flowing tutus, the sparkle of their jeweled tiaras. Ballet is in the air here. You can almost feel it in every step you take.
Later that morning, I found myself in a beautifully appointed studio, ready to feel the power of the ballet barre myself. The Vienna State Ballet's classes are famous throughout Europe. I was so nervous! These ballerinas are incredible, every move elegant and strong, each arabesque graceful and refined. They have the artistry and technique, the magic, and, just like me, a deep passion for ballet. I found a spot in the back corner, a bit shy amongst these accomplished artists, and followed their movements, my own pink tutu a little louder than most!
What a lesson it was! These amazing ballerinas moved with a fluidity that makes ballet a visual treat for the soul.
From the Ballet Studio to a Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride
Feeling the energy of the class thrumming through my veins, I decided a spot of fresh air was in order. After all, who can resist the call of a grand, horse-drawn carriage? Vienna, it seems, knows how to enchant! The driver, a jolly fellow in a traditional costume, smiled, welcoming me aboard with a flourish.
The gentle clip-clop of horses' hooves against the cobblestones was music to my ears, the air tinged with the aroma of fresh-baked bread and roasted chestnuts from a nearby market. As I passed cobbled streets lined with baroque buildings, I was transported to another time. A time of royal processions, whispers of love and intrigue. It’s truly a sight to behold!
The air was alive with the calls of street performers, their music a tapestry woven with melodies from various times and lands. You could see their faces illuminated with passion, the very essence of performance. A young violinist poured her heart out through her instrument, each note drawing a story on the wind. There were musicians strumming guitars and playing accordions, street artists sketching faces with bold strokes of colour, all bringing a touch of colour and artistry to the streets.
A Royal Walk Through History and Shopping Delights
Following the rhythms of Vienna's heart, I strolled through the grand courtyards and magnificent gardens of the Schönbrunn Palace, a breathtaking glimpse into the life of Austrian royalty. Imagine waltzing in these magnificent rooms! The ornate halls and stately gardens hold centuries of secrets and whispered conversations. Each statue and fountain, every sculpted bush and painted fresco, tell a story, whispering of power and grace, love and tragedy.
Speaking of stories, a new book about ballet in Vienna, focusing on the tutu's evolution in fashion and history, is out this month and it had me hooked from the first page! I found myself buying every vintage ballerina book I could lay my hands on in the elegant little bookshops of the Old Town. This city is perfect for finding treasures.
There’s a lot to love about the vintage fashion in Vienna. From ornate, delicate lingerie to antique jewellery, the shops of Vienna hold unique treasures for every occasion.
Even the boutiques in the stylish district, are packed with dazzling, unique styles. My pink tutu definitely added an extra sprinkle of colour to my walk through this stylish district. After a few hours of searching for new pieces to add to my collection of tutus, and buying some exquisite lace that’ll definitely go into my next creation, I finally sat down for some traditional Wiener Schnitzel in a bustling local cafe. This Austrian classic was utterly divine, the perfectly crisp exterior, the tender meat, the creamy sauce… it's no wonder this dish is famous!
Vienna: A Symphony of Joy
My journey, however, isn’t just about ballet, although that is my guiding star. It’s about discovering the hidden corners of the world, tasting the flavours of each unique culture, and embracing the joy in every moment.
With each sunset painting the sky in hues of purple and orange, a magic comes alive in Vienna. As night descends, the city becomes a stage for grand performances. Opera and musical theatre come alive with voices soaring to breathtaking heights.
Every corner I turned this week offered a fresh dose of joy and inspiration. Whether I’m lost in the rhythmic energy of the waltz at a traditional Viennese cafe or exploring the vibrant artistry of street performers, Vienna has embraced me with open arms, sharing its vibrant culture and breathtaking beauty with each passing moment.
And oh, I'll leave you with this - the biggest news of all: the Viennese Waltz has become the city's latest fashion craze, and I just know this new style of dance is going to be big next year!
You can watch for my pink tutu's take on the Viennese Waltz soon!
Love always,
Emma
